Apprendre une langue ancienne à l’ALA (Académie des langues anciennes) - 32e édition

Chers Amis de l’Académie des Langues anciennes,
Le site Web est en cours de remaniement de façon à vous donner satisfaction à l’occasion de cette trente-deuxième édition de la session d’été de l’Académie des Langues Anciennes. Vous pouvez dès à présent télécharger l’affiche de l’année 2013 et le formulaire  (recto et verso) qui comprend le programme ainsi que le bulletin d’inscription. Ces derniers se trouvent à gauche de la page d’accueil. Il suffit de cliquer une fois pour les activer.
La réception des participants aura lieu le lundi 15 juillet de 14 heures à 18 heures au plus tard. Le retrait des clés se fera à la résidence de l’Ermitage, boulevard Gambetta.
Les cours débuteront le mardi 16 juillet à 9 heures à l’IUT de Digne (y compris le samedi matin) et s’achèveront le jeudi 26 juillet. Le départ aura lieu le lendemain?
Comme vous le constaterez, les formules ont été légèrement modifiées afin de donner à la formule B un statut amélioré. Pour ceux qui, inscrits à la formule A, désireraient cumuler avec la formule B, nous demandons une participation, — dans la mesure du possible. Voir les modalités dans le formulaire d’inscription.

Les nouveautés en 2013

Cette année encore, notre programme se poursuit avec les enseignements habituels, à cette différence près que nous ajoutons exceptionnellement, cette année, le persan (ou farsi), qui sera assuré par Yvon Le Bastard, qui est notre meilleur spécialiste. C’est une occasion unique pour faire connaissance avec cette langue parlée par 93 millions d’individus, en Iran, en Afghanistan et au Tadjikistan. C’est une langue indo-européenne écrite avec des caractères arabes. Sa littérature est une des plus riche au monde, dans laquelle se sont exprimés des littérateurs et des poète tels Ferdowsi, Nizami, Sa'adi, Hafez, Rûmi, Rûzbehân et Ghâzali. Soyez nombreux à découvrir ce patrimoine exceptionnel.
Dans les formules B, où nous proposons d'autres découvertes chaque année, vous pourrez découvrir ce que l'on sait de la langue et de la civilisation étrusque ainsi que l’on sait la Bible des Septante, par deux des meilleurs spécialistes en France de ces questions, Yves Liebert.

Philippe Cassuto a accepté de donner, cette année, la conférence suivante, conférence, qui réjouira ceux qui s'intéressent à la Bible hébraïque:

You can now download the poster of the year 2013 and the form (front and back) which includes the program and the registration form. They are located to the left of the homepage. Just click once to activate.

Reception of participants will take place on Monday 15 de juillet 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the latest.
The key collection will be at the home of the Hermitage Boulevard Gambetta.
Classes begin Tuesday, July 16 at 9 am at the IUT of Digne (including Saturday morning) and will end Thursday, July 26. Departure will take place the next day.

French can’t block the English signal

Times Higher EducationRow over use of language in sector a moot point, study finds. In parliament, the press and the academy, France is bitterly divided over whether its universities should be allowed to teach courses in English. However, recent findings show that the use of the language is widespread in French higher education, suggesting that the intense debate has been overtaken by events. On 28 May, the French National Assembly passed a bill to reform higher education, paving the way for greater university autonomy and changes in governance. But it is Article 2 of the legislation, which concerns courses in foreign languages, that has provoked uproar among politicians and academics. Under current legislation known as the Toubon Law, all university courses must be taught in French, with exceptions for language and so-called “international” courses. The new legislation, which is set to be examined by the Senate this summer, does not scrap the Toubon Law but extends the exceptions. Under the provision, universities will be able to run courses in English if they have agreements with foreign institutions or are part of European higher education programmes. Read more...

Howard Davies on French plans that could cost UK dear

Times Higher EducationHoward Davies and Maria Zhivitskaya say critics of a new law allowing foreign-language instruction are fighting lost Proustian battles. Almost 20 years ago Jacques Toubon, who was then the minister of culture in France, passed a law that mandated the use of French in all government publications and in the advertisements and websites of commercial bodies. The law has been widely ignored, although a couple of American companies have been fined for egregious breaches. Toubon himself has passed into history as a figure of fun, once famously greeted by a group of French students singing “Happy Birthday, Mister Allgood”. Read more...

Translators wanted! New EPSO (European Personnel Selection Office) competitions

The European Personnel Selection Office (EPSO) is looking for translators into Croatian, Danish, Dutch, English, French, Italian, Maltese and Slovenian to work for the European Institutions.
The application period should start for Croatian on 20 June 2013 and for the other languages on 11 July 2013.
Social media were one of the means chosen to publicise the competitions: DG Translation has set up Facebook pages for six of the languages, with information about the competitions and about work and life as an EU translator:

EUROPEAN LABEL AWARDED TO INNOVATIVE PROJECTS IN LANGUAGE TEACHING AND LEARNING

European priorities for the 2014-2015 Label Campaigns On the basis of the Commission Staff Working Document, Language competences for employability, mobility and growth accompanying the Communication "Rethinking Education: Investing in skills for better socio-economic outcomes", the European Commission hereby defines the priorities for the years 2014-2015.
1. Languages for social inclusion
The term "Social inclusion" is a keyword for allowing people to feel respected and valued as individuals and to secure that their basic needs are met, so that they can live in dignity. It is also imperative to guarantee people to be part of the social, economic, political and cultural systems which contribute to their integration into the surrounding community. From a sociological perspective, social inclusion also means assuring to all individuals and groups in society certain rights such as employment, adequate housing, health care, education and training. Especially within the latter context, but fully in line with the former ones, languages play a relevant role. Following up on successful innovative approaches to language learning for people of all ages and backgrounds, further ways should be found to encourage individuals mostly in need to feel socially integrated to learn languages, e.g. extending their scope to offer help for immigrants, people coming from disadvantaged backgrounds, disabled persons, people who use sign-language, to name but a few.
2. Languages and sport
Several sports clubs are involved in projects aimed to motivate young and adult people to learn languages and other cultures through their passion for sports, which means that sport can make language learning more interesting and appealing. There is a clear link between youth exchanges in the field of sport and the need to understand and practice foreign languages. This is all the more reason for combining sport with best practices in language learning and intercultural dialogue. It is not difficult to motivate people to meet across borders and practice sport together. During such exchanges, language learning often happens in a non-formal way. The goal is not necessarily that the language is learned perfectly, but rather about reducing barriers to language learning and about learning in a playful but constructive way. Label projects should explore how such practices can be proliferated and possibly translated to more formal settings. By looking at innovative learning practices and teaching resources inspired by a cross-fertilisation between international sports and language learning, new approaches should be targeted which can promote multilingualism all over Europe. The world of sport and the world of languages should come together to develop common paths and discover what sport can do for languages and what languages can do for sport; encourage synergies for the development of new multilingual projects involving the world of sports and education; identify areas where further action on languages is needed and discuss new channels, new actions and new methodologies.

“The impact of Spanish and Latin American's Open Course Wares in Higher Education” is a study conducted by the Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM), in collaboration with the National University of Distance Education (UNED).
The study shows that there is a profuse implementation of the OCW model in Spain, being the second country with more universities participating in it, behind the United States. However, the use of OER in higher education is still incipient in Latin America.
Authors conclude that there is a need to provide greater resources to develop the model further.

PUMO Project to Help Pupils Abroad with First Language Skills

PUMO intends to develop a series of online courses to support learning progress in subject areas specific to their countries of origin – this includes language skills, but also other subjects not necessarily addressed by the schools in their country of habitation. The potential educational disadvantages of mobility due to, for example, parents’ employment are thereby to be minimized through a detailed training programme for interested teachers and technology-enhanced support in the form of online educational resources (courses). In order to ensure this training and support programme successfully approach the needs of both mobile pupils and the teachers who help them, the PUMO Project is conducting a series of questionnaires and introductory seminars for teachers, parents, and representatives of the state educational systems to describe the state-of-the-art, to identify the needs and requirements, and further to help teachers to integrate and use these online courses.

Votre projet peut prétendre à l'obtention du « label européen des langues », initiative européenne permettant de valoriser des projets novateurs dans le domaine de l'enseignement et de l'apprentissage des langues. Les labels européens des langues sont remis lors d'un concours annuel organisé par la Commission européenne et les agences nationales dans chacun des 33 pays de l'Europe de l'éducation.

German tie-up

When I was young, French was the only foreign language on offer in my high school and college. Today’s students have as many as nine foreign languages to choose from: Arabic, French, German, Mandarin, Persian, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and Tibetan.
Various universities across the country such as M.S. University of Baroda, Kerala University and Mumbai University have been conducting credit and semester-based programmes in German Studies for several years now. Germany has been the most proactive in spearheading the study of its national language across India. “Studying German is easy for Indians who are multilingual.” says Herr Bernhard Steinrucke, Director General of the Indo-German Chamber of Commerce (IGCC).
