On 25 October 2013, two new studies on translation and multilingualism will be discussed by experts in legal translation and in intercultural studies. The first is a topic close to the heart of many translators working with institutional texts: "Document quality control in public administrations and international organisations" reviews best practices in a selection of legal environments and makes recommendations. The second study, "Translation and language learning", argues that translation today is back in fashion in language teaching, as a tool for motivation and for enhancing intercultural skills.
Young people will also be in the limelight: four young researchers from the EMT (European Master's in Translation) universities will make poster presentations of their research projects on related topics. Directorate-General for Translation’s new interns from Brussels and Luxembourg will join in the open discussion.
Participants include representatives from universities, the language industry, language institutes and professional associations.

The second LIND-Web Forum

will gather language industry stakeholders from translation and language technology companies to universities and freelancers to discuss ways of highlighting and bringing forward the language industry and to promote its job generating potential.
The event goes together with the Translation Studies Day [18 KB] . This will allow participants to meet and exchange thoughts with players from the language industry and academia.

In the framework of the new programme the European Commission aims to provide a centralised online scheme to assess, monitor and support linguistic competences of individuals participating in mobility actions financed by the programme Erasmus+.
The upcoming call for tender will aim to select 1 or 2 provider(s) to supply and manage the relevant services.

The latest Civil Society Platform on Multilingualism meeting updated articipants about the current policy priorities of European Commission (EC) Directorate-General for Education and Culture (DG EAC) and their impact in the area of multilingualism. Furthermore it allowed the platform members to present to the EC representatives the outcomes of the working groups created in the previous meeting of the Platform.
Being part of the group on non-formal and informal language learning, EAEA had the chance to illustrate to the participants how these ways of learning might overcome the traditional obstacles to adult language learning: lack of time and motivation, cost-related constraints and cultural and infrastructural barriers.
The Platform met on Friday, 11th October 2013 in Brussels.
Policy updates
Participants learnt how the last EC initiatives such as Opening up Education and Rethinking education could impact on language learning in Europe. Some words were spent on the OECD skills survey results (PIAAC), presented by the EC and the OCED on the 8th October 2013.
"The PIAAC results are telling us that this is the momentum for the adult education sector", Ana Carla Pereira, Head of Multilingualism Unit from DG EAC pointed out. Important place in the discussion was given to the new programme for education, youth,culture and sport - ERASMUS+. Civil society representatives exchanged their concerns on the information available so far which were noted down by the EC representatives. By Anna Codrea-Rado. A €15b initiative from the European Union to encourage study and training abroad will address unemployment and social mobility, says EU commissioner. Language learning is an EU priority, Androulla Vassiliou, EU commissioner for education, culture and multilingualism, has said. Launching the revamped Erasmus+ programme, Vassiliou said languages are essential for addressing unemployment and social mobility within the European Union.
"Languages are one of our six priority topics under Erasmus+," Vassiliou said. "Whether it is for mobility for language learning, partnerships between institutions for language teaching, or policy support, it is one of our priorities."
The Erasmus+ programme will provide grants for more than four million people across the EU to study or train abroad. It comes into force in January 2014 and aims to address the language skills deficit holding back young people from international jobs. More...

Récemment vous avez poussé un coup de gueule sur l’invasion de l’anglais, On a des moyens de résister ?
C’est-à-dire que ça dépend de vous, ça dépend de nous. Ce que je voudrais moi, c’est inviter les Français à faire la grève, chaque fois qu’une publicité sera en anglais on n’achète pas le produit, chaque fois qu’un film ne sera pas traduit dans le titre, on ne rentrera pas dans la salle de cinéma. On ne rentre pas dans un shop, on entrera dans une boutique. Et dès lors que les publicitaires et les commerçants auront 10 % de moins de chiffre d’affaires, ne vous en faites pas, ils reviendront au Français. La classe dominante n’a jamais parlé la même langue que le peuple. Autrefois ils parlaient latin et nous, on parlait français. Maintenant la classe dominante parle anglais et le français est devenu la langue des pauvres ; et moi je défends la langue des pauvres. Voilà, c’est pour ça que je demande qu’on fasse la grève. J’en ai marre que la SNCF nous fasse des «smiles». J’en ai plein le dos de cette affaire. Je suis d’accord qu’il y ait une langue de communication, il y en a toujours eu une. Autant ce genre de choses commence à mettre la langue française en péril et c’est dramatique.
