Programa de Apoyo a Universidades Solidarias de América Latina

Since 2010 the Program works for the sustainability of solidarity projects in universities of the region

This project, propelled by the Centro Latinoamericano de Aprendizaje y Servicio Solidario (CLAYSS), facilitates the access to teaching, training and the sustainability of solidarity projects in universities of Latin America. Thus, the program wants to institutionalize Service-Learning to promote a social commitment among universities supporting research and student’s learning.
For that purpose, it offers technical assistance during 10 months, including training for authorities, teachers, and leading students of selected institutions; scholarships to participate in the International Week of Service-Learning that will take place in Buenos Aires next August; all material needed for the training; and participation on an international research program about service-learning.

IAU launches a portal on the Role of Higher Education in Promoting Sustainable Development (HESD)

The Portal is a contribution to the UN-Decade on Education for Sustainable Development (UN-DESD)
The International Association of Universities (IAU) has launched the initial draft of a portal on the role of Higher Education in Promoting Sustainable Development (HESD) during the IAU 14th General Conference. The portal maps out actions and initiatives developed by higher education institutions and Associations of higher education, which are IAU Members, to promote sustainable development. Providing detailed contact information on where actions are undertaken, the portal aims at better networking between initiatives.
The initial draft of the portal will be improved in the next few months thanks to comments received. IAU Members are invited to send information on initiatives they would like to see featured on the portal.

Proposal for the creation of an Association of Conferences of Rectors of Latin American universities

Peruvian and Argentinian rectors meet to discuss the initiative

The president of the Peruvian Asamblea Nacional de Rectores (ANR), Dr. Orlando Verásquez Benites, met with the rectors of the Universidad Nacional de Cuyo and the Universidad Nacional de General Sarmiento, both from Argentina, met last November 2012 to propose the creation of an Association of Conferences of Rectors of Latin American universities.
The goal for this Association would be to bring together all the public and private universities of each country to improve the quality of education and harmonize the higher education systems of the continent.
During the first semester of 2013 the most important entities of Latin America will get together to improve this proposal.

Routledge Education launches the online platform “Research Into Higher Education Abstracts”

The platform is published on behalf of the Society for Research into Higher Education

Routledge Education has launched the online platform “Research Into Higher Education” to facilitate the research of articles in a fast way. The platform exists to propagate knowledge about, and encourage discussion of significant research into higher education.
The new online platform includes 750 abstracts published annually and updated tri-annually, a complete archive from 1964 onwards, sophisticated search facilities, drawing on established taxonomy, hypertext linking to full-text articles and document delivery services, supported by CrossRef, unlimited browsing and Printing, full technical support and online demos available.

HEFCE Guide to Quality and Education for Sustainability in Higher Education

This national two year project is now available

The Guide to Quality and Education for Sustainability in Higher Education, funded by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE), seeks to introduce Education for Sustainable Development into quality assurance and enhancement practices. The initiative has taken new steps to develop sector frameworks that will support the development of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) as a cross-cutting curriculum agenda, and has also resulted in new inter-agency collaboration in this area.
This resource is an attempt to make connections between Education for Sustainability (EfS) and the practice of quality assurance and enhancement in the HE curriculum. The project ahs been led by the University of Gloucestershire, working in collaboration with the UK Quality Assurance Agency and in partnership across a consortium with four other English HE institutions.

Latin American Universities and the International Rankings: Impacts, Scopes and Limits

The conference Latin American Universities and the International Rankings: Impact, Scope and Limits sought to provide a space for dialogue and debate on the international university classification systems.
The Conference brought together university rectors, ranking producers, and academic specialists who presented their views and perspectives on the topic.
In an effort to spur further debate on the issues, as well as to prompt the implementation of the resulting initiatives and responses, the organizers compiled and systematized the main ideas and proposals expressed throughout the conference as a Final Declaration.
The document offers the combined vision of the participants, and will be further enriched with views from throughout the region, with the goal of presenting a common Latin American position on the international rankings.

UOC’s Revista de Universidad y Sociedad del Conocimiento (RUSC) publishes new dossier on university management

The dossier is coordinated by Dr. Francisco Rubio, from University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (Spain)

The Revista de Universidad y Sociedad del Conocimiento – RUSC (Universities and Knowledge Society Journal), issued by the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC), presents a new dossier entitled “Innovation and Good Practices in University Government and Management”.
This publication is comprised of six articles that analyze new management models, which are believed to become increasingly pluralist, and also present examples of good practices in the application of technology to management.
For example, some analyzed projects are in the fields of governance reform on a European scale, the management of teaching documents, digital scholarship, and university spinoffs.

The Universidad Católica de Temuco commits to a more sustainable Chile

UC Temuco is one of the 22 universities signing an historical Agreement
Twenty-two of the most important universities of Chile, the Universidad Católica de Temuco (UC Temuco) among them, have signed an agreement to promote sustainability in the country. The "Acuerdo de Producción Limpia" (Agreement on Clean Production) has been penned with the Consejo Nacional de Producción Limpia (CPL), institution that depends on the Chilean Ministry of Economy.

The Agreement will reduce by 5% the consumption of energy and water, will measure the carbon footprint of every institution and will give professional training based on sustainability values, amongst other details. Furthermore, all institutions will work on waste reduction.
UC Temuco thinks universities have a social responsibility that includes taking care of the environment, train future professionals on that field, and train students on waste management.

AMECYD celebrated its 7th International Conference: “Educación para toda la vida”

The AMECYD Conference promoted a place to discuss, share and plan Lifelong Learning

The 7^th AMECYD International Conference, under the theme Longlife Learning (Educación para toda la vida), gathered scholars, researchers and authorities to share experiences, unify criteria, and plan strategies related to Lifelong Learning.
For that purpose, the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), la Asociación Nacional de Universidades e Instituciones de Educación Superior (ANUIES), and the Mexican Association of Continuing and Distance Education (AMECYD) joined their efforts.
Through 3 different discussing tables, they treated the topics such as quality criteria, LifeLong Learning Challenges or education models and its contribution to LifeLong Learning.

Red Sea University participates in a research project for multilingual education

Sudan is a multilingual country with approximately 70 different languages

The Red Sea University (Sudan), through its Beja Cultural Studies Centre, will participate in a research Project on rural Beja children sponsored by the Aun El-Sharief Gasim Centre For Sudanese Languages and the Ministry of Education of the Red Sea State. This project will be executed in the context of the Mother Tongue Based Multilingual Education (MTB MLE), a methodology designed to help speakers of minority languages towards effective learning.
This pilot project will be implemented in a number of schools of the state from pre-school to eighth grade. The results of this project will be used as a guide for other minority language groups in the country, in an effort to not exclude any child of education because of language barriers and to bring the right to education to all children while respecting their language and culture.
