When ideas for long-term nation-building run up against the limitations imposed by a low tax-and-spend polity, in the short-term low tax wins every time. And the long-term in Australian politics and policy consists of the sum of all the short-terms.
We are now seeing cuts to public funding without increases in private funding. The international student market, which provides almost one university dollar in every five, has been in the doldrums since 2009. The Opposition implies a worse outcome, as its reading of the fiscal position is likely to result in large-scale spending reductions in many areas, including higher education.
When the political parties will not talk about the substance of higher education and research, we depend on civil society, the media, the public in all its forms, and the institutions of higher education and research themselves, to define and advance the issues. This book is designed to stimulate and contribute to such a process of discussion.
It has been prepared by academic staff associated with Australia’s principal research centre focused on higher education: the Centre for the Study of Higher Education (CSHE) at the University of Melbourne. The chapters focus on the big policy issues facing tertiary education in Australia. They are research-based but prepared in a reader-friendly style to enhance discussion. They do not form a unified whole: there is no party line and some authors differ from others. a Indian students in Australia were strongly influenced by the country's migration policy when it comes to enrolling in higher educational institutes, according to a latest study.
"Apart from traditional motivators such as higher rates of returns and employability associated with a foreign qualification, Indian students are very responsive to changes in Australia's labour market, immigration and student visa policies," said the study published in the Australian Journal of Education. Atlantic Universities plead with Ottawa to end work-to-rule campaign. Thousands of international students planning to study in Canada might not be here when classes start in September because of a slowdown processing visa applications outside the country, warns the Association of Atlantic Universities.
The group is asking the four Atlantic premiers to lobby the federal government to do what it can to end a work-to-rule campaign by the workers who handle visa applications.

With the government aiming for 200,000 by 2020... The number of students from abroad choosing to study in Korea has risen considerably in recent years as the country has become increasingly internationalized.
There were almost 90,000 foreign exchange students in the country in 2011, according to the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology. The ministry has sought to encourage the trend, setting a target of 200,000 students in the country by 2020 as part of efforts to transform Korea into an “educational hub” of Asia.
The interest in Korea as a place to study over the last decade would seem to give the government reason to be optimistic about reaching its goal. Korea had fewer than 17,000 international students in 2004.
But the arrival of students from more than 170 different countries has presented its own challenges, from how well foreign students adapt to Korean life and are accepted, to questionable admission procedures from unscrupulous universities and issues surrounding coursework and student support.
