The knowledge based economy as a discursive context

Hedda - Higher Education Development AssociationPosted by Marielk. This guest entry is written by Dr. Carrie Hunter who works at the University of British Columbia. Carrie earned her Master of Education in adult and workplace learning at Queen’s University in Kingston Ontario, Canada and her PhD in Higher Education from the University of British Columbia where she focused on lifelong learning in the context of the knowledge economy. She currently works as a research coordinator for the Centre for Health Education Scholarship at UBC’s Faculty of Medicine. The post draws on a recent article “Shifting themes in OECD country reviews of higher education”, published in Higher Education, Vol 66. Issue 6.
OECD, Political Economy and Domestic Higher Education Policy
Domestic policy is increasingly developed in international contexts and influenced by international organizations such as the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). Through various forms of soft governance (Mahon & McBride, 2008a) including its prolific publications, expert groups, policy recommendation papers, and its research muscle, the OECD has the potential to both reflect and affect how we understand higher education and its relationship with the economy and how we construct domestic higher education policy. Conference review: 10th International Workshop on Higher Education Reform in Ljubljana

Hedda - Higher Education Development AssociationPosted by Marielk. This guest post is by Inga Zalyevska who is currently enrolled as Masters student in Research and Innovation in Higher Education, an Erasmus Mundus program coordinated by Danube University Krems and University of Tampere.
The International Workshop on Higher Education Reform was held in its 10th edition on October 2-4 at the University of Ljubljana in Slovenia. As the title suggests, the event was focused on reform, with the emphasis on the big picture over time. Keynote speakers and panelists were invited to trace the impact of higher education reform over the past several decades and forecast its future development.
The conference was a comfortable size of about 80 participants from different countries in the EU, North America, Africa and Asia. The majority of the attendees were senior scholars and policy analysts – a group well qualified to provide a bird’s eye view of the HE reform, but also perhaps disillusioned or even ‘tired’ of the issue as Catherine Odora Hoppers, the first keynote speaker, admitted. Her address reviewed the development of South African HE since its establishment and into recent times. More...

Women, men and working conditions in Europe

http://www.eurofound.europa.eu/pubdocs/2013/49/en/1/ef1349en.pngAuthor:     Smith, Mark; Piasna, Agnieszka; Burchell, Brendan; Rubery, Jill; Rafferty, Anthony; Rose, Janna; Carter, Lauren
Summary:     Despite much legislative progress in gender equality over the past 40 years, there are still gender gaps across many aspects of the labour market. Inequalities are still evident in areas such as access to the labour market, employment patterns and associated working conditions. This report explores gender differences across several dimensions of working conditions, examining relevant country differences, analysing the different occupational groups of both men and women, and comparing the public and private sectors. It also looks at the impact of the crisis on gender segregation in employment. Based on findings from the fifth European Working Conditions Survey (EWCS), conducted in 2010, the analysis offers a striking picture of women and men at work across 34 European countries today.
An executive summary is also available.

The European Alliance for Apprenticeships initiative was launched in July as a way to mobilise stakeholders in the education, training and employment sectors to strengthen the supply, the quality and the image of apprenticeships across Europe. How is education structured in your country?

http://ec.europa.eu/wel/template-2012/images/logo/logo_en.gifThe 2013/14 schematic diagrams on the 'Structure of the European education systems' will give you easy answers to these questions. The diagrams show you what mainstream schooling looks like in 33 European countries and how different levels of education, from pre-primary to tertiary, are broken down. The diagrams also indicate the general ages of students and the programme duration for each level. Names of national institutions and study programmes are listed in the language of each country. The Eurydice publication covers 39 education systems in the 28 EU Member States, the EFTA countries (Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland) as well as the candidate countries (Iceland and Turkey).
