Focusing on England in particular, the report examines the “challenges for universities and government in funding any expansion of student numbers, given the backdrop of current funding restraints”. Drawing on research by the Institute for Fiscal Studies [IFS], the report calls for consideration of funding options that are “sustainable and ensure that higher education remains accessible to all applicants”.

For more information on the key findings and themes in the report please see the UUK press release.

EUA ‘TRENDS 2015’ project to map key HE developments in Europe

The European University Association is launching the 7th in the series of its flagship TRENDS projects, which undertake a detailed analysis and mapping of developments in Europe's changing higher education landscape.
EUA has been conducting the TRENDS projects, and the resulting reports published since 1999, with a view to feeding an institutional perspective into European higher education policy discussions, and improving exchange and networking among and support for European universities. Over time, EUA’s TRENDS reports have become crucial sources of information and reference works for policy makers and the higher education community alike.
With the structural changes of the Bologna Process now largely concluded, the TRENDS 2015 project will focus on how Bologna and various other changes that have taken place in higher education in recent years contribute to fostering new forms of learning and teaching.
For these reasons the new TRENDS project will concentrate on issues such as the student body, staff development, academic programmes and the development of e-learning, whilst ensuring sufficient continuity with previous surveys to allow for a continued long-term analysis of key European Higher Education Area developments.
As with past TRENDS projects, a questionnaire will be addressed in the coming weeks to the leaders of EUA member universities, with a separate questionnaire circulated among national rectors’ conferences in order to map national-level developments. This will be followed up in 2014 with thematic focus groups and telephone interviews.
The results of the project will again be published in a report, which will be presented to European Higher Education Ministers at the next Bologna Ministerial Conference in Armenia in 2015.
More information on the TRENDS 2015 project will be published in the future through the EUA website and newsletter.

LinkedIn moves to legitimize Web classes by Coursera, Udacity, others

By . If an online course doesn't get you college credit, why watch video lectures and complete Web assignments?
Perhaps showing off to potential employers could create that incentive. A new partnership between LinkedIn and some of the most-hyped companies in education technology suggests that providers of Massive Open Online Courses, aka MOOCs, are seeking to establish online courses as valid professional credentials that people can tout on their LinkedIn profiles. LinkedIn announced the new "Direct-to-Profile Certifications" pilot program in a blog post today. Organizations participating in the program include: MOOC startups Coursera, Udacity and Udemy; Harvard and MIT-backed nonprofit MOOC provider edX; publishing giant Pearson; e-learning companies Lynda.com and Skillsoft. Why We Shouldn't Celebrate Udacity's "Pivot"

https://s3.amazonaws.com/hackedu/audreywatters_75.jpgBy . Fast Company published a lengthy and glowing profile today of Udacity co-founder Sebastian Thrun, dubbing him the “godfather of free online education.”
Many in my Twitter feed balked at that headline, no surprise. Some interpreted “Godfather” in its Mario Puzo incarnation: Michael Corleone – perhaps this is my pop culture imagination getting the best of me – ordering the murder of the heads of other families so as to seize total control. But me, I can’t help but think instead about the traditional, religious meaning of the term: a godfather is the man who takes personal responsibility for the moral growth of a child. Either way, it is a strange and unsettling title for Thrun for those of us who’ve found his pronouncements about the future of education to be in turn threatening, dire, apocalyptic, and, well, pretty amoral.

Suite...
