Cedefop work in European Commission publications

Cedefop - European Centre for the Development of Vocational TrainingCedefop’s research on how to improve the responsiveness of European education and vocational education and training (VET) systems has been endorsed in a series of recent publications by the European Commission. These publications aim to inform EU Member States on challenges and required actions to achieve the education and employment targets of the EU2020 strategy.

ReferNet plenary: Responsiveness key to improving visibility of VET

Cedefop - European Centre for the Development of Vocational TrainingThe growing importance of cooperation and networking in improving visibility of vocational education and training (VET) was at the core of the 11th plenary annual meeting of ReferNet, Cedefop’s European network of VET, on 5 and 6 November. 
Opening the meeting, ReferNet coordinator Sylvie Bousquet said to the 70 participants from across Europe gathered in Thessaloniki that the plenary represented ‘not only a milestone but also momentum’ and that ‘striving for quality had inspired us.’ She added that the aim is to ‘strengthen the partnership with more inter-member activities throughout the year.’ More...

5th Conference on Public Service Interpreting and Translation (PSI&T)

QuizThe international event will take place on 4-5 April 2014 at the University of Alcalá (UAH) in Madrid.
The conference aims to offer PSI&T researchers, practitioners, trainers, academics, public service authorities and people who are generally interested in intercultural communication, translation and interpreting, a forum for dialogue in this changing society, as well as an opportunity to exchange opinions.
The main theme of the Conference is "(Re)visiting Ethics and Strengthening Connections". Those who are interested should send proposals on the following topics (but not exclusively):
    Discussing ethical issues in both research and teaching
    Studying interpreters and translators in conflict
    Interpreting and translating for victims of war, sexual assault, survivors of torture and trauma, etc.
    Exploring connections with other types of interpreting such as conference or court interpreting
    Analysing advances in PSI&T between local, national, and international institutions.
The Conference will include plenary lectures, papers, seminars, posters and round tables. Participants delivering papers will have a maximum of 30 minutes (discussion/questions time included). The official languages will be Spanish and English. 
All those who are interested in participating are kindly asked to send a 200-word abstract by 29th November 2013 using this webpage. The decision of the Scientific Committee will be sent by 10th December 2013

In France, New Tech Academy Defies Conventional Wisdom

Mr. Niel, an affable, longhaired telecommunications executive with a high school diploma and several billion euros to his name, has spent the past decade gleefully disrupting France’s staid corporate establishment. University education not just about jobs and money, says new University of Victoria president

By Lindsay Kines. The University of Victoria’s new president cautioned Tuesday against measuring the value of a post-secondary education solely by economic terms. 
Jamie Cassels, who was installed as the seventh president and vice-chancellor at the start of fall convocation ceremonies, said the increasing focus on jobs and money is understandable in a time of global uncertainty. 
“But to focus purely on the immediate bottom line misses the value of education as part of the absolutely essential longer gain for individuals and society,” he said in remarks to graduates and their families at the University Centre Farquhar Auditorium. More...

The Observatory on Borderless Higher Education (obhe.ac.uk) will share its conference with Google on 11 - 12 December , who will announce a new initiative on the opening day. The UK’s minister for higher education David Willetts will address the second day of the conferen ce. Key contributors include Pearson’s Chief Education Advisor Sir Michael Barber and senior HE professionals from around the world. 
The conference, presented in association with Laureate, OC&C and The UK HE International Unit is entitled ‘The internation al higher education revolution: Impacts on mobility, qualifications, networks’. It will be held at Senate House, University of London, and at Regent’s University London. The conference takes as its starting point current developments in online learning and explores how they may impact on three aspects of international higher education: student mobility, how qualifications are gained, and international partnerships and networks. 
Keynote speakers are: Sir Michael Barber (Chief Education Advisor at Pearson), Rt Hon David Willetts MP (Minister for Universities & Science), and Professor Nigel Thrift (Vice - Chancellor at the University of Warwick).
