Focus on the Words

In particular, he complains about my focusing sometimes on single paragraphs and even sentences - "out of context," he says. News: U-Multirank launched yesterday

By Hedda. Yesterday, 13th of May,U-Multirank finally reached its launch date and the data was presented to the public. The project has been funded with the European Union and has cost about 2 million euros. In this first edition, the ranking includes 850 institutions that can be compared in a multidimensional manner. The key argument has been to provide a system where institutional scores are not aggregated to one single score, but provide a means for users to rank institutions according to selected criteria. Six Months After Layoffs: No signs of growth at Desire2Learn

By Michael Feldstein. Late last year I wrote a post about Desire2Learn’s laying off more than 7% of the workforce, speculating that something had changed at the company. In particular, I didn’t buy the company line about continued growth.
In the end, I have trouble believing that these recent cuts are solely based on improving Desire2Learn’s growth without needing to correct for slower-than-expected growth. The arguments made by our sources that these are significant cuts driven by not hitting growth targets are compelling. However, there is no smoking gun that I have found to back up these claims definitively. More...

Unizin: Indiana University’s Secret New “Learning Ecosystem” Coalition

By Michael Feldstein. Indiana University has been the driving force behind the creation of a new organization to develop a “learning ecosystem”. At least ten schools are being quietly asked to contribute $1 million each over a three-year period to join the consortium. The details of what that $1 million buys are unclear at this point. The centerpiece for the short-term appears to be a contract with Instructure for use of the Canvas LMS. Why 'Educational Reform' Sends Educators Running for Cover--And How We Can Change That

By Cathy Davidson. When someone says "educational reform," most teachers want to duck and run for cover. No wonder. The history of education, K-12, has been regulation and regulated change: every decade or so, another politician or corporate "visionary" or educational theorist (i.e. moi) decides "everything has to change" and produces a pilot program and then the wheels grind and it becomes a "standard" and teachers around the country have to tear up the old lesson plans and do it all over again. Typically the reform comes from someone else (typically a college prof, policy maker, or someone affiliated with a for-profit or non-profit educational enterprise) outside K-12 and is delivered to K-12 teachers.
