When Free Tuition Meets the Next Recession

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/styles/large/public/confessions_of_a_community_college_dean_blog_header.jpgBy Matt Reed. Community college enrollments tend to be counter-cyclical to the economy. When the economy goes down, enrollments go up, and vice versa. That makes sense, if you think about it.  For traditional-age students, parental income is a major factor in choosing a college. Read more...

'Useful'

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/styles/large/public/confessions_of_a_community_college_dean_blog_header.jpgBy Matt Reed. Next week a colleague and I are hosting a presentation for faculty and staff in which we’ll share the institutional data used for decision-making. It’s not the first time we’ve done it; we had a similar “data day’ last year. The idea was to honor the goals of transparency and shared governance by making sure that everybody had access to the same facts. An informed campus, I assumed, would have a better shot at making good decisions. Read more...

Do I Need a Doctorate?

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/styles/large/public/confessions_of_a_community_college_dean_blog_header.jpgBy Matt Reed. A new correspondent writes:
I am a PhD candidate currently in my 4th year of a neurobiology graduate program. I am drawn towards teaching and very interested in pursuing a career teaching biology at the community college level. I am writing because I am very seriously considering quitting my graduate program and I am wondering if you can give me some advice about career prospects after quitting graduate school. Read more...

The Test

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/styles/large/public/confessions_of_a_community_college_dean_blog_header.jpgBy Matt Reed. What’s the difference between “traditional” and “seasoned?”
It’s the difference between Anya Kamenetz’ previous book, DIY U, and her latest, The Test. I’m happy to report that the new book is a vast improvement on the earlier one. Read more...

Following Up on Free Community College

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/styles/large/public/confessions_of_a_community_college_dean_blog_header.jpgBy Matt Reed. Last week, I offered a quick first response to President Obama’s suggestion of making community college free. Having had a few more days to think about it, and having seen the academic Twitterverse explode, I have a few more suggestions for points to consider. Read more...

Hacking Your Research: Tablet Edition

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/styles/blog_landing/public/Screen%20Shot%202011-12-12%20at%2012.29.48%20PM.png?itok=ITDqfJNPBy Erin Bedford. I was lucky enough to be gifted an iPad mini for Christmas this year, and I’ve spent some time over the holiday break trying to figure out the best apps and tablet practices to make this technology work for me. While using a tablet to grade student papers is handy, I am most interested in using this tablet for research purposes. From reading and annotating articles, to reading ebooks, to accessing my research databases, to decluttering my office, I want this tablet to work as a research tool. Read more...

Create SMART Writing Plans

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/styles/blog_landing/public/Screen%20Shot%202011-12-12%20at%2012.29.48%20PM.png?itok=ITDqfJNPBy Erin Bedford. We’re now halfway through January, meaning New Year’s resolutions are in full swing. If yours has already fallen flat, you’re not alone—fewer than two-thirds of people make it through the first month, and only 8% end up achieving their resolutions. Ouch. It’s likely that I’m not the only grad student this year to make a goal that relates to writing—whether it’s to write a grant proposal, to get published, or to finish your dissertation. Read more...

Procrastinating?

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/styles/blog_landing/public/Screen%20Shot%202011-12-12%20at%2012.29.48%20PM.png?itok=ITDqfJNPBy Erin Bedford. Procrastination is highly related to task-aversiveness. We’ll avoid doing tasks that we perceive as being not much fun, even if we know that in the end, we’ll be happy with the result. But as many of us already know, the task is rarely as awful as what we first perceived it to be. Half an hour after finally starting on that abstract and looking at a finished draft, we realize that it wasn’t so bad after all—certainly not worth the five days we spent dreading its writing. Sony, Digital Paper, and Social Media

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/styles/blog_landing/public/technology_and_learning_blog_header.jpg?itok=aQthgJ91By Joshua Kim. Kudos to Sony for leveraging their social media platforms and community to share my review of the DPTS1 Digital Paper System.
My review was positive about the potential of Sony’s Digital Paper System, as I noted strengths in the ability of the device to handle handwriting, its great size, thinness, light weight, and long battery life. Read more...
