The aim of this three-step selection process is to rank by order of merit the candidates who are qualified to benefit from an education at Ecole Polytechnique.

Key requirements
- Candidates must be under 26 years of age on January 1st of the year of the competition
- Candidates must have completed 2 to 3 years of undergraduate studies in Science
- An excellent command of Mathematics is key to success
- Candidates cannot be French citizens
- Candidates cannot apply more than once
- Candidates must meet the medically defined criteria of physical fitness
Moreover, candidates cannot have been enrolled in French preparatory classes for Grandes Ecoles, nor in any preparatory program for an engineering school within a French university, nor at any French Grande Ecole, nor in the final year of a Master's degree, nor in a doctoral program.
