More women needed in science and universities

The European Parliament votes today upon the report “Women’s careers in science and universities, and glass ceilings encountered” brought forward by the Committee in Women’s Rights and Gender Equality. The report includes an analysis of the current situation of women in science, where they are still underrepresented and face direct or indirect discriminations. The current data indicates the existing of a glass ceiling, which means that existing invisible barriers, which are mainly based on prejudices, that limit women to develop their career paths towards higher positions. ESU calls on the European Commission to exclude both public and private education from TTIP

In 2013 the governments of the European Union (EU) member states mandated the European Commission to negotiate the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP). Since then, already 10 rounds of negotiations have taken place, with the last one in mid-July when particularly services where tabled for discussion.
Even though the European Commission (EC) and the US have faced heavy criticism from the civil society for the lack of transparency in the negotiation process, there are still among other points, public services, such as education that have been negotiated behind closed doors. ESU to take part in SciChallenge - New Horizon 2020 Project

The European Students’ Union is glad to announce that it will take part in SciChallenge - a new project, funded under Horizon 2020 financial instrument.
The project focuses on developing novel concepts to actively integrate young boys and girls in science education using a contest-based approach to self-produced digital education materials from young people for young people. ESU’s role as a partner will be to spread information, raise awareness and achieve cross-sectoral interaction between research education and industry. More...

The US News published its first rankings of US colleges and universities in 1983. Since then they have become an indispensable, although often criticised, guide for students, admissions advisors and other stakeholders. New Ranking from Russia

The Moscow based Round University Ranking has just issued its latest global rankings based on data supplied by Thomson Reuters. Altogether there are 20 indicators divided into four groups: teaching, research, international diversity and financial sustainability. The first two groups have a weighting of 40 per cent each and the latter two 10 per cent. More...
