Higher Education and Research Bill

By Gordon McKenzie. The Higher Education and Research Bill passed its Second Reading in the House of Commons, 19th July, by 294 votes to 258. The vote was preceded by five and a half hours of debate. Concerns about Brexit infused many of the speeches from Opposition members, with a number arguing that the uncertainty caused by Brexit should lead to the Bill being and revised. Are fees the best way forward for Nigerian universities?

The University of Ibadan in Nigeria is “emblematic of the crisis of the Nigerian state”, argues the institution’s vice-chancellor, Abel Idowu Olayinka, in this video interview.
The University of Ibadan opened in 1948 as a small African outpost of London University, with just 104 students. Over the past 70 years, it has grown exponentially and now has a student body of 26,000. Read more...

More online degrees on the horizon?

Short on time? Here are the highlights:

Participants at a recent education technology conference heard that the next phase of development for online learning may well include full undergraduate degrees offered by leading institutions
The technology and quality assurance mechanisms for such a move are already in place
There may also be some momentum in this direction arising from early examples of both post-graduate and undergraduate MOOC courses for credit, in some cases leading to complete degrees
A further expansion of full academic programmes online is supported as well by research findings as to the strong performance of students in online and blended learning programmes. Read more...

Indian universities not a big draw for foreigners

Every year, close to 2 lakh Indian students sign out of the domestic education sector to pursue a foreign degree. The counterflow, however, is nothing to write home about.
A headcount of foreign students by the HRD ministry for 2013-14 showed that enrolment of international students in Indian varsities was up by a modest 11,000 to touch 31,126. This barely conspicuous increase took place at a time when the foreign student population in universities across the world was growing at the frenetic pace of 60 per cent since 2000. More...

Maintien au domicile des personnes âgées : la Cour des comptes préconise une rationalisation des qualifications

Entre 2010 et 2060, le nombre de personnes âgées dépendantes pourrait croître de 100 %. La Cour des comptes s'inquiète de la connaissance imprécise des parcours des personnes âgées dépendantes, ce qui nuit à l'évaluation collective de besoins comme à la programmation des moyens. Néanmoins, pour adapter l'offre de services aux besoins futurs, la Cour des comptes, qui avait établi un rapport en 2005, émet à nouveau des préconisations. Voir l'article...

Apprentissage et mobilité longue en Europe

L'"Association pour la mobilité longue des apprentis" lance, en septembre 2016, une nouvelle expérimentation qui permettra à 150 apprentis de bénéficier d'un séjour longue durée (6 à 12 mois) dans un pays de l'Union Européenne. Ce programme, placé sous le pilotage des Compagnons du Devoir, réunit 36 centres de formation d'apprentis (dont 16 français parmi lesquels le CFA Compagnons du Devoir de Bordeaux, CFA de la Chambre de Métiers de Charente-Maritime) issus de 14 pays de l'Union Européenne organisés en consortium.
