 Asian Association of Open Universities (AAOU) is a non-profit organization of higher learning institutions that are primarily concerned with education at a distance, namely, education in which the systematic teaching and the communication between student and teacher or institution take place mainly by a variety of media. AAOU was founded in 1987 by a number of open universities in the Asian region who realized the significant contribution of distance education in democratizing the provision of learning opportunities to mankind.

All of the students failed university admission exams in Liberia?

BBC is reporting that in one of the two state run Liberian universities, all (!) of the students failed at the university admission exam.
Current Liberian president, the Nobel prize winning Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has frequently made statements regarding issues in the Liberian educational system. She sees the educational system as a key aspect for the nation’s future wellbeing and success:at the end of the day, if you do not have an educated population, we will be unable to build the national capacities of our young people“, and she has called for a total overhaul of the system. We are pleased to share yet another session from the HEIK academic seminar series in the field of higher education, with both invited international speakers and members of the research group HEIK (Higher Education: Institutional dynamics and Knowledge cultures) here at the University of Oslo.
This lecture was recorded in April 2013 and features Jens Jungblut who discusses how political parties matter in higher education policy.
Jens is also involved as a teacher at the Hedda master programme, where he teaches both courses on methods and higher education governance.

http://profile.ak.fbcdn.net/hprofile-ak-prn1/174887_161806250531786_2075947517_q.jpgA while ago we posted about a new researcher network “Collaborative Research Network (CRN) on the European Research Area”, with its main focus on the construction of the Europe of Knowledge – processes and policy initiatives in Europe that lead to the construction of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) and European Research Area (ERA).
The ERA-CRN is a network of researchers at all career stages researching the construction of the European knowledge area. It includes researchers from multiple disciplines, ranging from law to communication studies, sociology, science policy and higher education studies, EU studies, international relations and political science.
The network coordinators have asked us to share the information for those of you that are interested or are working on any of these themes in European integration or knowledge governance:

  • The role of law and ideas
  • Governance and its effects;
  • Legitimacy, trust and values;

International Conference: European Higher Education in the World 5th - 6th September 2013 Vilnius, Lithuania

Following the European Commission's Communication "European higher education in the world" adopted on 11 July, the Lithuanian presidency is hosting a conference for over 150 higher education stakeholders from the EU and beyond.  The conference offers an opportunity for dialogue on the different tools available to further internationalisation processes, and on the future place of Europe in the global higher education landscape.
The event takes place in Vilnius on 5-6 September, and will be opened by Prime Minister Butkevičius of Lithuania, Education Minister Pavalkis and Commissioner Vassiliou.

Juvenes Translatores 2013

http://ec.europa.eu/languages/news/images/juvenes-translatores.pngAmid ever-growing interest, the European Commission will run its Juvenes Translatores translation contest for the seventh time in 2013
The contest is organised for 17-year-olds in secondary schools throughout the European Union.
They will translate a 1-page text between any 2 languages from among the EU's 24 official languages. This year the theme of the texts will be Citizens.
The authors of the best translation from each EU country will be invited to Brussels to receive an award, meet the Commissioner for multilingualism and see how professional EU translators work.
This will also be the chance to get to know their counterparts in linguistic talent from all the other countries.
