Dropping enrollment squeezes U.S. universities' revenues-Moody's

http://www.reuters.com/resources_v2/images/masthead-logo.gifLast week the U.S. Census reported college enrollment declined for the first time in six years in the fall of 2012. That, in turn, threatens higher education revenue, said Moody'sInvestors Service in a special report on Monday. Already, "precipitous enrollment declines for fall 2013" have hurt the credit quality of two private colleges - Loyola University in Louisiana and Central College in Iowa - and a public one, St. Mary's College in Maryland.
"Enrollment declines in higher education are credit negative because they heighten competitive pressure for all universities. This limits opportunity to grow tuition revenue, now the primary revenue for the majority of public and private universities," said Moody's. Read more...

‘Soft power’ potential of international students lost

http://enews.ksu.edu.sa/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/UWN.jpgBy Ryan M Allen. There is a certain assurance that the comparative international education community holds for international students. Overall student intake numbers are lauded as ‘wins’ for nations. The end of the university? Not likely

http://enews.ksu.edu.sa/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/UWN.jpgBy Eric Beerkens. Agents and the ethics of international higher education

http://enews.ksu.edu.sa/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/UWN.jpgBy Philip G Altbach and Liz Reisberg. Global student mobility creates big business. There are multiple reasons for choosing to study abroad, among them a desire to increase employability in the home labour market, the inability to find relevant study opportunities at home, and the desire for migration. The motivations of countries and universities recruiting international students are equally complex and increasingly commercial. More...
