Suite...

NMC horizon #report 2014 on #education in #HighEd

Inge Ignatia de WaardBy Inge Ignatia de Waard. The NMC horizon report is ALWAYS an inspiration. Although I do think about latest trends, this 52 page report always brings the most important trends together in a comprehensive and brief overview. The report also addresses some challenges that are still standing in this digital age (scaling teaching innovation, relative lack of rewards for teaching, low digital fluency of faculty, competing educational models - although I like the debates coming from the competition). While reading the challenges I did wonder whether the priorities were complete. I mean, maybe it is not being the best that matters, but getting all on board? Allowing people to grow and reach their own potential, and not necessarily reach the potential society/higher ed is setting out for most of us. Will need to take that up in a more philosophical post later on.

Preparing for #emooc14 & reflecting on #OER

Inge Ignatia de WaardBy Inge Ignatia de Waard. As the MOOC stakeholder summit in Lausanne, Switzerland draws near. I am hoping to get the most out of the conference. This means: getting ideas for my ongoing PhD research and paving pathways for the next MobiMOOC roll-out (which is now in my head set for October/November 2014.
The first is easy: getting into the research track and other sessions and hearing what other MOOC research colleagues have found. The second one is tougher, as it is a work in construction: planning a cMOOC with a twist tackling some MOOC challenges and options. For this reason I am hoping to catch up with Rory McGreal of Athabasca, Canada, a university that is part of the OERuniversities group. Read more...

Free trial year for reviewing #cloud #training option

Inge Ignatia de WaardBy Inge Ignatia de Waard. After having a quick look at a new training platform LearningStone I got quite excited. The new Cloud based platform (self-promoting as supporting training professionals with an instant, flexible online platform to support class based training groups) is developed by two experienced EdTech people (which is already a bonus). Sjoerd Boersma and Michiel Klonhammer just released their two year effort and it looks promising. Even after a first look the platform seems to make sense in terms of training options, quick group overviews, focused interaction spaces... Though admittedly I will need more time in order to really review the total package and see whether the ubiquity really works, the tools are truly intuitive and the centrality of the platform (bringing all course components together into one place) feels like a total package that would fit any trainer or course tutors agenda. #PhD journey – choosing a topic writing a #proposal

Inge Ignatia de WaardBy Inge Ignatia de Waard. There are many reasons for getting a PhD: career, academic interest, want to challenge your own learning, curiosity, specific areas which you want to investigate, escaping the feeling of stagnation, wanting to become top notch in your business or field of expertise, or being the first in your family to attain a doctoral degree. It ranges from pragmatic, to personal, to materializing hopes for the future. I wanted to start a PhD because I felt I had reached a limit and by earning a PhD I would be able to open up new opportunities. Whether or not that will work remains to be seen, but in the meantime I am doing it, taking charge of my own life (always a good thing in my opinion). What I share is based on personal ideas, so feel free to add what helped/s you along the way. Read more...

Education M&A Activity in 2013: Still growing, but changing

By Phil Hill. Like it or not, education is an industry, and much of the change we see affecting higher ed and K-12 institutions is driven by investment from the private sector. It can be useful to get a high-level view of the trends in private investments to help understand where private companies (edtech vendors, publishers, for-profit institutions, etc) are likely to move in the future. The Resilient Higher Ed LMS: Canvas is the only fully-established recent market entry

By Phil Hill. For a few years starting in 2009, it seemed one of the best ways to raise VC funds or corporate internal investment was to say “we can beat Blackboard with a new cloud-based platform”. Witness Coursekit / Lore, Instructure / Canvas, OpenClass, LoudCloud Systems, Helix, and even more recently MOOC platforms. There were many articles written as these new systems entered the market, but what if we look back and ask whether the LMS market has actually changed recently? The picture that emerges is one of surprising resiliency by the established LMS providers. More...

Open Data: A case study using IPEDS for online education

By Phil Hill. At e-Literate we’re planning to do more data journalism posts. Think of this along the lines of Harper Reed’s keynote last year as described in the Chronicle.
Harper Reed, who served as chief technology officer in President Obama’s 2012 campaign, offered those people what he jokingly called “an intervention.” More...

Wirtschaftsboss wettert gegen Akademisierung
