An Interview with Prof. Severance: MOOC & OER Proponent on “Sharing the Value that we Produce at U-M”

By Dave Malicke. Professor Charles Severance (“Dr. Chuck”) is a clinical associate professor at the University of Michigan School of Information (UMSI). Dr. Chuck has already made legendary contributions to the OER and MOOC movements. He’s held “office hours” with small groups of MOOC students from all over the world, was the first U-M faculty member to apply CC licenses to materials offered within Coursera, authored two openly-licensed textbooks (Python for Informatics, and High Performance Computing), was a leading developer of and evangelist for the IMS Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) standard, and has reached thousands of learners through Dr. Chuck Online, P2PU, Open.Michigan, and the iBooks store.

So what’s next for Dr. Chuck?

Programming for Everybody, a new U-M MOOC scheduled to start on Coursera on April 10, 2014. This free course will focus on teaching the basics of Python programming (with no complex math) to beginners from all backgrounds. MOOCs: The Future of College Education?

Darf man sich einschreiben, ohne zu studieren?

Natürlich ist das verlockend: einfach an der Uni einschreiben und ein halbes Jahr lang Busse und Bahnen nutzen, Ermäßigungen in Theatern und Museen bekommen und dazu noch günstig krankenversichert sein. Frage: Frau Schwan, die von Ihnen geleitete private Berliner Humboldt-Viadrina School of Governance hat fünf Jahre nach ihrer Gründung Insolvenz beantragt. Warum?

Wir Offline-Profs

E-Learning soll die Unis revolutionieren, doch der Umsturz lässt auf sich warten. Neben einigen Professoren voller Enthusiasmus wehren sich noch immer viele gegen das Online-Lernen. Begründung: Die vergangenen 2000 Jahre waren doch ganz gut.
Mancher Professor habe sich schon gefühlt "wie die Droschkengäule bei der Einführung des Automobils", sagt Professor Bernhard Kempen, Präsident des Deutschen Hochschulverbandes. Lernen via Internet sollte die Hochschulen revolutionieren, doch der prophezeite Umsturz blieb bislang aus. Integrated learning

We welcome your article (Funding for university teaching slashed, 27 March) which stresses the importance of teaching in higher education. The funding issues raised are extremely serious, but there is also an urgent need for a change in culture. At present there is a disparity between how universities value teaching compared with research, with teaching achievements contributing less to academic career development. Good research-informed teaching inspires students and changes lives; it also drives the UK's research base, leading to a virtuous circle between education and research that generates new knowledge and brings health, societal and economic benefits.
