On 25-27 March, a few days before the EU-Africa Summit, representatives of EU and African universities met in Brussels for the "Harmonisation of African Higher Education and Tuning Workshop on Credits and Portability of Qualifications", jointly organised by the European Commission and the African Union Commission.
The aim of the workshop was to bring together higher education stakeholders involved in the Harmonisation and Tuning pilot initiative in Africa and their EU counterparts in order to discuss credit transfer, portability of qualifications and Quality Assurance initiatives in Africa. The 2014 ACA Annual Conference will take place in Bordeaux, from 15 to 17 June. It will be co-organised by the Agence Europe-Education-Formation (2e2f) and it is expected to draw an audience of 300+ from Europe and elsewhere in the world. The conference bears the title Europe in the world. Higher education trends across the globe. It has three main foci. First, it will assess the relative attractiveness of European higher education on a global scale. Second, it will address present and future key issues of European and global higher education. Third, the event will analyse recent trends in higher education in major countries and regions around the world and present state-of-the-art partnerships between universities in these regions and countries and in Europe. The conference language will be English. Two of overall eight workshops, however, will be held in French.
Presenters at an ACA Annual Conference are chosen exclusively from a small group of internationally reputed experts from the fields of higher education research and higher education policy. Their names and short bios can be found on the ACA website.
This conference will provide food for thought, but also culinary and touristic delights. Conference dinner will be held in a Bordeaux vineyard. Participants will also be received in the town hall of Bordeaux, by the newly re-elected city's mayor and former French Prime Minister Alain Juppé. Traditionally, participants will have the afternoon before the opening of the conference to explore the host city. It will be an excellent opportunity to find out why the city is rightly called the "Pearl of Aquitaine" and why the historic part of the city figures on the UNESCO World Heritage List as "an outstanding urban and architectural ensemble" of the 18th century.

Knowledge grows when shared. The Academic Cooperation Association (ACA) has been sharing its knowledge on mobility issues with the European higher education community in the past two decades by means of ACA European Policy Seminars, ACA Annual Conference, ACA Newsletter and ACA publications. Over the past 20 years, with the events and publications, the Brussels-based think tank has gained the reputation of a European expert centre for mobility matters and an ever growing circle of friends in Europe and beyond.
In line with the opening of the European Union’s flagship mobility programme – ERASMUS – to the wider world in 2014, ACA has decided to open the door to its flagship monograph series ACA Papers on International Cooperation in Education for those with a shared interest in student mobility and the internationalisation of higher education. Designing sustainable internationalisation strategies and mastering global challenges will have a strong impact on the universities’ future. In INTERNATIONAL LECTURES, a new event series in Austria, experts will discuss challenges and opportunities presented by an increasingly international and intercultural setting at universities. University leaders will address how to internationalise research and teaching to a greater extent as well as how to include current social and economic issues in the curricula.

« Erasmus » ou le succès d'une Europe citoyenne au service de l'employabilité des Français.
Dans le cadre de la campagne des européennes 2014, un sondage a été réalisé pour interroger la notoriété d'Erasmus auprès des Français et les valeurs associées : convivialité, citoyenneté, compétence, formation et employabilité en France. Les résultats de cette expérience de vie en Europe sont étudiés : pratique des langues, amitiés, diplôme, formation, emploi obtenus.
Les orientations et priorités du nouveau programme Erasmus+ 2014-2020 sont aussi testées : ouverture aux salariés, formations non diplômantes, partenariats entreprises/collectivités, ouverture à d'autres continents… Sont enfin traités, le sentiment d'appartenance à l'Europe vs. à la France, ainsi que la connaissance de l'opportunité offerte par ces élections européennes 2014 : voter indirectement pour le Président de la Commission européenne.

The Agence Europe-Education-Formation France presented on 10 April the results of a survey by TNS Sofres Institute on the “Erasmus image” in France. The survey was conducted online with 1 000 individuals aged 16-65, in order to examine the reputation and values connected to the Erasmus programme.
When respondents were asked to name an EU programme or action that comes to their mind first, Erasmus ended up in the third place, just after EURO and CAP. Out of 73% of those who know about the programme, 37% say they know it well or very well. Only 3% of respondents, though, have had personal experience in Erasmus or a similar European programme, but all of them would recommend participation in the programme, mostly for improving a foreign language (72%), for friendships and intercultural encounters (60%) and for education or work (45%). Overall, it appears that Erasmus vehicles very positive values as a synonym for exchange. The programme is associated with language practice, the discovery of Europe, cultural openness (each for 95% of the French people who know Erasmus), training and competence (90%), and European citizenship (89%).
Directions and priorities of the new enhanced Erasmus+ (2014-2020) programme were also tested. These questions are an echo of open discussions during the pre-campaign for the European elections on issues of European mobility programs for employability and the construction of European citizenship. The results show that professional training, traineeships and partnerships as the three most interesting features of the new Erasmus+ programme.

From 29 April to 01 May 2014, the British Council’s Going Global international higher education conference will launch 8 new pieces of research. IIE will also present their campaign to double the number of US students studying abroad by 2020, and a case study will be shared from a UK institution demonstrating the importance of developing approaches to encouraging outward mobility.

ACA’s 42nd European Policy Seminar on Funding Student Mobility concluded on 10 April that the lack of funding is not the only mobility obstacle in Europe and not even a crucial obstacle in some countries where the majority of students are eligible for state financial support in one way or another. The lower than expected take-up rate of portable state grants and loans, found in ACA’s newest study on portable state grants and loans, is one of the indicators showing that students have other more important considerations when deciding on whether to move or not. These may include personal choices to be ‘stable’ that one has to respect, as well as other intangible obstacles that have not surfaced and are difficult to be tackled through national or European policies. 
“The lack of funding is what policymakers ‘can’ and ‘should’ tackle,” said Nicolai Netz who set the scene for a very high quality discussion between the speakers and audience throughout the day. The seminar attracted a dedicated crowd of specialists from 17 different countries, in particular from the UK, the Netherlands, Belgium and the Nordic countries.
