On International Students’ Day, 17 November 2014, we call on student organisations around the world to stand up for free education. On 17 November, we commemorate past student struggles and draw attention to the current ones. In 2014, as policy makers around the world gather to set a global education framework in the Post-2015 Development Agenda, we take action to assert the common student interest. Many observers have noticed that some universities enjoy a big advantage in the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), better known as the Shanghai rankings, because of Fields Medals in mathematics and Nobel prizes in three sciences and economics. Now, the Center for World-Class Universities at Shanghai Jiao Tong University has produced an Alternate Ranking from which the Awards and Alumni indicators have been deleted.
A little further down, Oxford, which has strengths in the arts and humanities, rises from 9th to 6th place while Cambridge, noted for research in the natural sciences, falls from 5th to 8th.
Among the universities that suffer disproportionately from the exclusion of the Nobel and Fields awards are Princeton, Moscow Lomonosov State University and University of Paris Sud (Paris 11). Several other continental European universities and Ivy League schools also lose out.

Academic Ranking of World Universities. More...

The Performance Ranking of Scientific Papers was originally published by the Higher Education Evaluation and Accreditation Council of Taiwan in 2007. Since 2012 it has been published by the National Taiwan University and is also known as the Taiwan Tanking.
It is a research-based ranking with indicators measuring number of articles, number of citations, h-index, highly cited papers and articles in high impact journals. The methodology tends to favour larger institutions and it is possible to click to a reference ranking of universities scaled according to the number of academic staff. The University of Toronto, for example, falls from fourth to tenth place.
Overall, these rankings show the continued domination of English-speaking universities, especially American ones, in the world of research. There are 45 American, eight British, five Canadian, four Australian and one Singaporean university in the top 100.

The social media site LinkedIn has launched new rankings based on the career paths of 100 million professional employees in its databases. The first step in the construction of the new rankings was to find the top companies where professionals in various fields work. This was done by identifying those desirable employers who can attract professionals from other companies and also retain them.
