Carnegie Classification Moves to Indiana University
The Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education has been an important tool for understanding the complex reality of tertiary education in the United States. The system has been operated since 1970 by the Carnegie Commission on Higher Education which issued its first report in 1973.The basic classification divides American institutions into Doctorate – Granting Universities, Master’s Colleges and Universities, Baccalaureate Colleges, Associates Colleges, Special Focus Institutions, Tribal Colleges and unclassified institutions.
