Taiwan Rankings Confirm US Dominance
The Performance Ranking of Scientific Papers was originally published by the Higher Education Evaluation and Accreditation Council of Taiwan in 2007. Since 2012 it has been published by the National Taiwan University and is also known as the Taiwan Tanking.
It is a research-based ranking with indicators measuring number of articles, number of citations, h-index, highly cited papers and articles in high impact journals. The methodology tends to favour larger institutions and it is possible to click to a reference ranking of universities scaled according to the number of academic staff. The University of Toronto, for example, falls from fourth to tenth place.
Overall, these rankings show the continued domination of English-speaking universities, especially American ones, in the world of research. There are 45 American, eight British, five Canadian, four Australian and one Singaporean university in the top 100.
