Erasmus Student Network (ESN) is one of the biggest interdisciplinary student associations in Europe. It was founded on the 16th October 1989 and its aim is to support and develop student mobility. ESN conducts every year several transnational surveys and research projects on students’ mobility and internationalization of higher education.
ESN, together with CHE Consult (DE), Brussels Education Services (BE) and the Compostela Group of Universities (ES), are carrying out an impact study on the Erasmus programme launched by the European Commission. The consortium led by CHE Consult is currently conducting a comprehensive study investigating the impact of the Erasmus programme on students, staff, institutions and business/employers.

In collaboration with the German Association for Adult Education – dvv International – UIL hosted its second Think Tank meeting on Lifelong Learning: Positioning Lifelong Learning in the Post-2015 Development Agenda at its premises in Hamburg from 12–13 December 2013. The overall aim of the meeting was to clarify the concept of lifelong learning and seek key stakeholders’ advice on positioning lifelong learning more saliently in the post-2015 universal, sustainable development agenda. Seventeen high level experts in the field of lifelong learning from all regions of the world, representing UNESCO Member States, UNICEF, WHO, World Bank Youth and non-governmental organisations, participated in the meeting.
The education goal in the post-2015 agenda is so far titled Quality Education and Lifelong Learning. This target will be taken strongly forward in the coming months by UIL and partner organisations. As lifelong learning is linked to and contributes to other targets of the development agenda, the participants pointed out that lifelong learning is not limited to education, but is linked to issues including health, employment, poverty reduction, and sustainable development. In national lifelong learning policies, attention should not only be paid to formal learning, but also non-formal and informal learning. The meeting also discussed a technical note on lifelong learning prepared by UIL. It will be revised based on the input received from participants and will be part of UNESCO’s series of technical notes. The meeting emphasized the importance of strong partnerships between international organizations, governmental and non-governmental organisations, and the private sector, in moving the lifelong learning agenda forward.

From Education to Employment in Times of Financial Crisis: Comparing Germany and Greece from a European and International Perspective
Students and scholars from three Greek universities recently came to UIL for a workshop on the transition from education to employment in times of crisis. The workshop was held in cooperation with the University of Hamburg and took place from 17–18 December.
Youth unemployment rates in Greece – as in many other parts of Europe – have risen sharply since the financial crisis, including for well-qualified young adults. At the same time, youth as a phase of life has changed greatly in recent decades. The aim of the workshop was not only to discuss theory and research, but also to consider what kind of evidence-based policymaking is needed to support successful education-to-employment transitions for young adults in today’s Europe.
Prof. Vasiliki Deliyianni-Kouimtzi from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki presented on post-crisis youth transitions in Greece. She said the workshop served as an important first step in starting a dialogue on youth unemployment between Greece and the rest of Europe:
“No single country can confront the kinds of difficulties we are facing alone, so we need the other European countries as well, to discuss the problems and find new ways to confront the crisis regarding young people and education.”
This workshop marks the starting point for extending the range of UIL activities in the European region and, globally, on contemporary youth and education questions.
