Hefce warning over overseas students and pensions

By . Slowing growth in international student numbers could have “a material impact on the sector”, while a financial blow from pensions could be looming. The Higher Education Funding Council for England’s annual report on the ‘Financial health of the higher education sector’, based on 2012-13 results and 2013-14 forecasts, also predicts that the abolition of student number controls will widen the financial gap between individual universities. Student visas: new immigration minister ups the ante

By . The government’s new immigration minister has threatened to make it tougher for education institutions to keep their student visa licences. In a speech likely to dismay universities, James Brokenshire warned that he has “considerable concerns” about some education institutions; rejected fears that immigration policy is harming “world-class” universities as a “ludicrous fiction”; and dismissed anger from academics about the immigration checks they must mount on students. Murray Edwards alumnae highlight challenges for women

By . ‘Gender-hostile’ work environments still high on list of problems. An all-women University of Cambridge college has celebrated its 60th anniversary by surveying its alumnae about their values, successes and the challenges they have faced. Murray Edwards College, founded as New Hall in 1954, contacted 4,700 of its former students and got replies from 954. The results have now been published in a report titled Women Today, Women Tomorrow. More...

Female students ‘with resilience’ perform better than men

By . Tough-minded women are likely to do better in their university studies than men with similar characteristics of “resilience”, a study says. Academics at Leeds Metropolitan University tested around 1,500 students at the start of their first year to see if levels of psychological resilience – deemed “the capacity of individuals to adapt to new challenges” – affected academic performance. University of the People gains accreditation

By . An online university established to take higher education to disadvantaged students around the world has received accreditation. The University of the People, which offers undergraduate degrees in computer science and business administration, has been accredited by the Distance Education and Training Council in the US just in time for its first graduating class, which is due to complete its studies in April. Although students pay a registration fee determined by the gross domestic product of their country of residence, along with a $100 (£60) administration fee for each exam they sit, those who cannot afford it can apply for a range of scholarships. Gamified PR

By Melonie Fullick. Some of you may have noticed that I tend to pay a lot of attention to university communications, both internal and external. It’s partly because this is one of the things I’ve researched (including for my Master’s thesis and my dissertation project); I also have a degree in communication studies and I’ve done some communications work myself, so I always find it interesting to see what approaches are being used. Why you should continue your professional development

http://www.universityaffairs.ca/images/Blog-phd-to-life.jpgBy Jennifer Polk - From PhD to Life. On Monday I finish a coaching class. This will be the second professional development course I’ve done since getting my PhD in 2012. Back then, I’d never thought I’d see another classroom ever again! And, it’s true, I haven’t: My coaching courses are all over the phone! But still; you understand. I enrolled in the MentorCoach Foundations program, a 31-week introduction to the art, science, and business of coaching, in May 2013. I didn’t know if I wanted to be a coach per se, but felt confident that coaching skills would help me in my work and life no matter the details. It didn’t take long for me to start thinking very seriously about making a career as a coach, though. When Ann-Marie McKelvey told us students to “get coaching!” I did. More...

The confidence game

By . While I’m writing this, “Do you suffer from Imposter Syndrome?” tops University Affairs’ Most Emailed list and nearly tops the Most Read list. The article has me thinking about confidence and its odd perceived roles in the career hunt. It’s funny how, in university career centres, we tend to take very different approaches regarding confidence when it comes to career exploration – figuring out what you want to do – and the search for a job that will let you do it. An impactful scientific career

http://www.universityaffairs.ca/images/BlogTheBlackHole.pngBy Jonathan Thon - The Black Hole. I was recently invited to give a keynote address at the Human Disease Mapping conference at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland  that was coordinated by a small group of the college’s PhD students and postdoctoral fellows. I was asked to share my experiences and story of my academic career in a period where global financial and humanitarian crisis is affecting young scientists’ hopes of doing what they love most science. Long-term and short-term, a degree is still a good bet

By Léo Charbonneau. An interesting Statistics Canada study, released on Feb. 27, contained some very good news for Canada’s universities. The study, entitled Investment of a Lifetime? The Long-term Labour Market Premiums Associated with a Postsecondary Education, examined the earnings premiums associated with completing a college certificate or a bachelor’s degree, compared to completing a high school diploma. It found that a university degree pays off big time, with most university graduates earning hundreds of thousands of dollars more over their careers than those with college or high-school credentials. Those with university degrees also experienced fewer temporary or permanent layoffs (see the key data table here). Read more...
