The number of presidents at public universities making more than $1 million a year more than doubled to nine in the 2012-2013 school year as performance bonuses drove pay higher, according to the Chronicle of Higher Education. Public college presidents made on average $478,896 last year, up 5 percent from the year before, the publication found in a survey released yesterday. Base salaries rose 1 percent to $403,496. The gain in compensation comes as states have repeatedly cut aid, forcing universities to raise tuition and count more on fundraising, while requiring increased performance standards such as graduation rates to get funding. The number of jam-packed classes at the Seoul National University is on the rise despite the Education Ministry’s policy to enhance the quality of classes, data cited by a state-run college information website showed Monday.
According to Academy Info, 123 classes at the nation’s top university in the first semester of this year have 100 or more students. It marked a significant increase from 98 classes in the first semester of 2013, and 94 during the same period of 2012. More...

The president of the Higher Education Board (YÖK) Prof. Gökhan Çetinsaya announced on Monday the completion of a report examining the state of higher education in Turkey over the last 30 years, which concludes that Turkish universities are in need of 45,000 more academic staff.
Presenting a comprehensive analysis on the past, present and future of Turkish higher education, the report -- titled “Growth, Quality and Internationalization: A Road Map for Higher Education in Turkey” -- claims that the low number of academic staff in Turkey compared to the size of the student body poses a serious threat to future quality in higher education. By Neela Debnath. An activist in Chile has burnt documents representing $500 million (£300 million) worth of student debt during a protest at Universidad del Mar. Francisco Tapia, who is also known as “Papas Fritas”, claimed that he had “freed” the students by setting fire to the debt papers or “pagarés”.
Mr Tapia has justified his actions in a video he posted on YouTube on Monday 12 May, which has since gone viral and garnered over 55,000 views. More...
