It won't take long to spot a cell phone on a table in The Huddle at Augustana College.
Researchers surveyed more than 150 college students, and 60 percent of them said they are addicted to their cell phones and spend on average eight to 10 hours a day on it.

Last month, the U.S. Department of Education released data showing the share of borrowers at each institution of higher education that defaulted on student loans within three years of entering repayment. Most of the press coverage has focused on the 21 schools that exceeded the default rate set by Congress (30 percent for three consecutive years or 40 percent in any one year), and will likely be cut off from federal financial aid. After six years of rapidly increasing prices which made Prepaid unaffordable for most families, this year's prices are the lowest since 2007.
The cost of a four-year university plan for the family of a newborn has dropped from $53,729 to $27,379, or from $350 to $173 a month. More...

Undergraduate enrollment during the last two years has climbed 7 percent, to 4,011 students this fall — the largest in the university’s history. And freshman enrollment during the same period is up 15 percent.
Forecasters had predicted just the opposite. The shrinking population of high school graduates and the tuition hikes that have made college increasingly unaffordable were expected to decrease enrollments. More...

Local community colleges block students who haven't paid tuition, and track them down for old payments. In turn, some students are blocked from a better education to get a better job.
Westchester Community College has resorted to taking students to court to collect tuition in arrears; the two-year public institution had about 631 active lawsuits against former students in state Supreme Court so far this year. Rockland Community College carries almost $3.4 million in past-due tuition from its students. More...
