Insecure Work Conference 2014

Participants in the NTEU National Insecure Work Conference in Hobart last November were empowered by the experience of meeting with others precariously employed like them. They also learned of the differences and similarities across types of insecure work in higher education and research; and they heard a commitment by the National Executive to heighten the priority of addressing both insecure work in the sector and the issues for insecurely employed staff. Academic freedom defended in Canada

In Australia, at times, we toss around the expression ‘academic freedom’ rather loosely and at others we are not vigilant enough to name decisions and behaviours of universities as violations of academic freedom. US Adjuncts stage Walk Out Day

By Jeannie Rea (NTEU National Office). Thousands of adjunct academic staff in US universities walked off the job on 25 February in the first National Adjunct Walkout Day. Organised by a loose coalition of activists using social media to get their message out, many universities and colleges were impacted particularly when students and other staff backed up the adjuncts by participating in meetings and rallies. International Women’s Day 2015

By Jeannie Rea (NTEU National Office). We must never forget that International Women’s Day on 8 March honours the start of the New York 1908 garment workers strike led by young immigrant women. IWD was created by internationalist women rights campaigners meeting in Copenhagen in 1910 who decided that there should be an international day for action on women’s rights and universal suffrage. IWD from early days also focused upon peace, and organised against war mongering and compulsory military service. More...

VANUATU - SUPPORT OUR APPEAL

By Jeannie Rea (NTEU National Office). Australian unions have a long history of standing in solidarity with Vanuatu. In the 1970s, we supported the independence movement against French/British rule, which saw a republic declared in 1980. It is time to stand in solidarity with Vanuatu’s workers again.

On the 14th March, the largest cyclone to hit the South Pacific tore through Vanuatu. It caused widespread destruction displacing 70% of the population and destroying 90% of all buildings. Dangerous levels of global warming is at the heart of more severe storms in our region, leaving our Pacific friends increasingly vulnerable to coastal salt water flooding, destroying crops and food supplies

Whither peer reviewing?

The pressure to ‘publish or perish’ alongside the casualisation of academic work and ludicrous workloads has forced the editors of 43 academic journals to write to universities and funding bodies calling for institutional recognition and support. The Regulation and Funding of Australian Universities: Order or Chaos?
