Promising Practices for Strengthening the Regional STEM Workforce Development Ecosystem (2016)
U.S. strength in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines has formed the basis of innovations, technologies, and industries that have spurred the nation’s economic growth throughout the last 150 years. Universities are essential to the creation and transfer of new knowledge that drives innovation. This knowledge moves out of the university and into broader society in several ways – through highly skilled graduates (i.e. human capital); academic publications; and the creation of new products, industries, and companies via the commercialization of scientific breakthroughs. Despite this, our understanding of how universities receive, interpret, and respond to industry signaling demands for STEM-trained workers is far from complete. More...

Pipelines, Pathways, and Institutional Leadership: An Update on the Status of Women in Higher Education
In 2009, The White House Project: Benchmarking Women’s Leadership was released. This groundbreaking report examined the leadership roles of women across 10 sectors of the workforce in the United States. Key findings illustrated that women in academia make up more than half of all college students, but only slightly more than a quarter of all full professors and less than 15% of the presidents at doctoral degree granting intuitions. It also documented that female faculty members have not made progress in closing the salary gap—women made 83% of what male faculty made in 1972 and only 82% of what male faculty made in 2009. In 2013, the Colorado Women’s College at the University of Denver released the follow-up report, Benchmarking Women’s Leadership in the United States, expanding the depth and breadth of the original report.
This report seeks to continue the conversation by offering an update of key descriptive statistics on women in higher education in an effort to promote dialogue on how to move the needle and increase the number of women leaders. Next steps are provided from the important work at the University of Denver.

University Pre-Accelerators the New Hot Trend, But What Are They?
Over the last few months, a number of universities across the country have launched pre-accelerator programs – a new trend that has emerged in university-led efforts to support entrepreneurial growth among faculty and students. This week, the Digest examines this growing trend and attempts to provide insight into two important questions about pre-accelerators:
- What are they?
- What are their goals?
In January 2014, City University London, the Accelerator Academy, and their partners announced the launch of FastForward (FFWD) London and they branded it as the world’s first pre-accelerator. Voir l'article...
Application of an "interdisciplinarity" metric at the paper level
The application—in a large bibliographic database—of an “interdisciplinarity” metrics measuring the extent to which knowledge from a priori disconnected subfields is integrated within individual scientific papers is presented. This metrics is then used to study “interdisciplinarity” patterns over time and across subfields, as well as to perform a comparative analysis of the “interdisciplinarity” of ERA (European Research Area) and non-ERA universities. Excluding the social sciences and humanities, the results show that “interdisciplinarity” is increasing over time and that it is generally more pronounced in applied research fields. In fact, technical universities are over-represented among universities having a greater proportion of highly “interdisciplinary” papers.
