The role of higher education for human and social development

The role of higher education institutions is today's world immense, complex and vital. A wide range of challenges and opportunities is emerging, with many political, economic and social implications. Perhaps most significant are the challenges associated with shifting perspectives of knowledge itself, which are strongly influencing the role and the responsibility of universities in society. Universities are well positioned to link the local and the global and this gives them considerable access to and influence over change process in may societies. It may enhance their potential to contribute to human and social development through the promotion and facilitation of citizen participation and involvement in these processes. See more...

GUNi focuses its research and activity in one specific topic related to the challenges that higher education is facing today. This topic defines the theme of the World Report, the International Barcelona Conference, the academic seminars and relevant researches and programs endeavored for a period of 2-3 years.
The current topic in which GUNi is working is related to the Glocal University.

The financing of universities

Higher Education as a quality public service with strong social commitment is a necessary condition for inclusive sustainable development of nations. Although history demonstrates this certainty over time and across the nations, higher education is at a crossroads. On the one hand, world development is led by the so called knowledge society and nations, as well as individuals need to face it with quality higher education. This helps to explain the unprecedented expansion of higher education systems worldwide. The Glocal University - Engaged universities, both at regional and global level

Higher Education institutions (HEi) are identified as key players from both global and local perspectives, since they have the singular responsibility of giving adequate answers to both legitimate needs and interests. On one side, HEi should contribute to the achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and of the Goals and targets settle down on it (SDGs). On the other side, HEi should contribute to the development and progress of their immediate societies, guaranteeing a positive impact on their region.
