Take yesterday’s “news” in the Daily Telegraphthat “Students ‘must be stripped out of immigration figures’”. The article reported findings from the Higher Education Policy Institute (HEPI) – a think tank that claims to be independent and non-partisan, yet is funded by UK Universities – adding that prospective Conservative MPs believe that students should be removed from the net migration target. Better language skills for migrant construction workers is the focus of the CoLa-project (construction-related language learning for low-skilled migrant workers).
This project, co-financed by the European Commission, supports migrant workers’ professional career and social integration. It also aims to improve health and safety at European construction sites.
Construction is staffed by high levels of migrant workers. In many cases migrant workers lack host country and work-related language skills. Experts consider language deficiencies as a barrier to career development, to improving safety in the workplace and to a successful social integration. The CoLa project

By . LSBF says many of its students do have the right to work. A Home Office suggestion that about 300 international students at a private college have been working in contravention of their visas was based on a misunderstanding of their right to work, the institution has said. In a statement to the House of Commons on Tuesday, immigration minister James Brokenshire said that although overseas students at private colleges are not allowed to work, the London School of Business and Finance “has 290 foreign students who worked and paid tax last year”. Most recently, presidents of 28 Catholic and Jesuit colleges and universities united in a fast for immigration reform on Ash Wednesday (March 5, 2014). In doing so, they joined the “Fast for Families” movement, which reignited the immigration debate last fall when the movement’s leaders, supported by many members of Congress and The President, fasted for twenty-two days on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.
