The Digital City of the Mediterranean, set up by the Digital resources service of the USR-3125 (MMSH) was begun as part of RAMSES, a Network of excellence of research centres on Mediterranean humanities and social science studies (2006-2010) financed by the The Sixth Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development (FP6).
It is one of the elements which ensures the continued existence of the RAMSES network which continues today with the financial support of A*MIDEX.
The Cinumed collections and source contents come from scientific activities and projects, documents and editorials undertaken by the Maison méditerranéenne des sciences de l'homme (MMSH) and/or in collaboration with Euromediterranean partners and particularly those who support the RAMSES network.
"Cinumed Labs" has been carried out thanks to the support of the Région Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur.

Cinumed is a platform for the pooling and sharing of knowledge in the field of Mediterranean studies in humanities and social sciences.
The Digital city of the Mediterranean (Cinumed) was initiated by the digital Resource service as part of the Network of excellence of research centres on Mediterranean-Ramses² (6e PCRD), humanities and social science studies and aims at ensuring the sustainability of the digital resources produced during this programme (2006-2010). It continues henceforward in the RAMSES (A*MIDEX) project by combining new resources produced by the MMSH research laboratories and its partners.
Mediterranean studies, a scientific and documentary field
The Digital City of the Mediterranean comes in the wake of the founding project of the MMSH and the scientific and documentary landscape linked to its activities which tend to renew its subjects, research fields and approaches in the field of Mediterranean studies. The MMSH encourages interdisciplinarity, exploring new thematic areas of research and welcomes programmes which come from transversal research themes from the national network of Centres for humanities and social sciences.
A collaborative portal that is rich in multimedia content
Cinumed is a platform which links sources of interdisciplinary digital content which stem from research, publication and documentation.
This portal is enriched by periodicals, heritage material (archives, iconography, printed material and knowledge bases….), multimedia content (video and audio material), bibliography, chronicles and cartography... It brings theses elements together using a common taxonomic treatment: a semantic framework which enables users to cross-reference and create a dialogue, link by link, between sources of an editorial nature and theoretically unique. Thus the structure of the data enables users to see and read the field of Mediterranean studies as an area of comparative analysis.
The idea is to put these Mediterranean issues at the centre of a unique electronic portal, a reference portal of which the content and functions evolve and are accessible to all users whether individuals or groups: students, researchers, institutions and the general public...
This is the whole purpose of the Digital city of the Mediterranean, which is a technical, documentary, and editorial portal, bringing a contribution by encouraging a network of national and international partners to capitalise, enhance and make available scientific and documentary resources in the field of the humanities and social sciences.
Creating a dialogue
Today the exchange of data is at the heart of scientific and documentary challenges concerning collaboration, partnership and the sharing and pooling of resources. This is all the more important in that the landscape is varied and heterogeneous and refers to skills and many frameworks of reference, that of the researcher, documentalist and archivist.
Interoperability is still a horizon to be conquered.
Cinumed works together with the content producers whilst respecting their individual approach. The digital platform makes it possible, whatever the differences in referencing and refining of presentation notes, to label resources according to the following categories: the discipline, the area of interest, the key words, the geographical and chronological scope, the institution, the person, the language and the type of document…
A federated search engine based on this taxonomy enables users to find documents, to classify them and refine the research. Thus, for example there could be a dialogue between architecture and archaeology, history and anthropology, between a video and an article, photography and a research archive, between Berber and English.

Initiée par le Service Ressources numériques dans le cadre du Réseau d’excellence des centres de recherche en sciences humaines sur la Méditerranée-Ramses² (6e PCRD), la Cité numérique de la Méditerranée (Cinumed) vise à pérenniser les ressources numériques produites durant ce programme (2006-2010). Elle se poursuit, désormais, dans le projet RAMSES (A*MIDEX) en agrégeant de nouvelles ressources produites par les laboratoires de la MMSH et ses partenariats.
La Cité numérique de la Méditerranée s'inscrit dans le sillage du projet fondateur de la MMSH et dans le paysage scientifique et documentaire lié à ses activités qui tendent à renouveler objets, terrains et approches dans le domaine des études méditerranéennes. La MMSH favorise les croisements disciplinaires, l’exploration de nouvelles thématiques de recherche et accueille des programmes issus des thématiques transverses du Réseau national des Maisons des sciences de l’homme.
Cinumed est une plateforme qui associe des sources de contenus numériques interdisciplinaires issus des activités de recherche, d'édition et de documentation. Périodiques, fonds patrimoniaux (archives, iconographie, imprimés, bases de connaissance...), contenus multimedia (vidéo, audio), bibliographie, chroniques, cartographie... enrichissent ce portail qui les rassemble par un traitement taxonomique commun : une architecture sémantique qui permet de croiser, de faire dialoguer, de lien en lien, des ressources aux contours éditoriaux a priori singuliers. Ainsi, la structuration des data donne à voir et à lire le domaine des études méditerranéennes en tant que champ d’analyse comparée.
L’enjeu est d’inscrire le questionnement méditerranéen au centre d’un dispositif électronique unique, portail de référence évolutif en contenus et en fonctionnalités accessibles à tous les utilisateurs individuels ou collectifs : étudiants, chercheurs, grand public, institutions...
C’est tout le sens du projet de la Cité numérique de la Méditerranée, dispositif technique, documentaire et éditorial qui contribue, ainsi, en mobilisant un réseau de partenaires nationaux et internationaux, à la capitalisation, à la valorisation et à la mise à disposition des ressources scientifiques et documentaires en sciences humaines et sociales.
L'échange de données est aujourd'hui au cœur des enjeux scientifiques et documentaires de collaboration, de partenariat, de partage et de mutualisation. Ceci est d'autant plus important que le paysage est divers et hétérogène et renvoie à des pratiques de métiers et à des référentiels multiples : ceux du chercheur, du documentaliste, de l'archiviste...
L'interopérabilité est toujours un horizon à conquérir.
Cinumed collabore avec les producteurs de contenu en respectant leurs démarches propres. La plateforme numérique permet, par-delà les différences de référencement et d'enrichissement des notices, de qualifier les ressources à partir des catégories suivantes : discipline, domaine d'intérêt, mots-clés, couverture géographique et chronologique, institution, personne, langue, type de document...
Un moteur de recherche fédéré basé sur cette taxonomie permet de retrouver les documents, de les regrouper par « classe » et d'affiner la recherche. Ainsi, par exemple, l'architecture pourra dialoguer avec l'archéologie, l'histoire et l'anthropologie ; la vidéo avec l'article, la photographie avec l'archive de recherche, le berbère avec l'anglais...
Des relations insoupçonnées s'offriront ainsi au lecteur qui, s'ouvrant à de nouveaux intérêts, pourra explorer de nouvelles interdisciplinarités. Plus...
