Oxford v-c says fees should better reflect its ‘16k costs’

Times Higher EducationBy . The real cost of a University of Oxford education is £16,000 a year and the fees system should be better related to such an amount.
That is the view of the institution’s vice-chancellor Andrew Hamilton, whose comments in his annual oration today form the most significant public pressure for fees to be increased since the cap was raised to £9,000 in 2012. Read more...

Ireland Emerges As New Higher Education Hub

http://www.businessworld.in/BW-Home-Main-theme/images/bwlogo.jpgBy Ankita Ramgopal. For those students looking for higher education opportunities overseas, Ireland is the hot new destination. The primary reason for the country's growing popularity is perhaps the fact that it is easier on the pocket when compared with favourites such as UK, New Zealand and Australia. Ireland has seen a 100 per cent growth in the number of Indian students in the September round of admissions this year as compared to last year, although the base has been very small, growing from an average of 1000 in 2012, as indicated by the Ambassador H.E., Feilim McLaughlin. The country is known as one of the largest education destinations for American students, and now it is hoping to forge a similar relationship with India. More...

http://graphics8.nytimes.com/images/misc/nytlogo152x23.gifBy . American adults lag well behind their counterparts in most other developed countries in the mathematical and technical skills needed for a modern workplace, according to a study released Tuesday. The study, perhaps the most detailed of its kind, shows that the well-documented pattern of several other countries surging past the United States in students’ test scores and young people’s college graduation rates corresponds to a skills gap, extending far beyond school. MOOC'in: Learning Beyond Letter Grades

http://www.hastac.org/files/imagecache/homepage_50/pictures/picture-1522-da031f7f34ad1c7a34896077c432a367.jpgBy Sheryl Grant. Why do so many schools use letter grades? Where did they come from? What do they tell us and fail to tell us about the learners? What is the relationship between letter grades, student learning, and assessment?
Those are a few of the questions Bernard Bull and others will be exploring in a 6-week MOOC on Learning Beyond Letter Grades that kicks off this week. With a syllabus that focuses on the benefits and limits of different kinds of assessment, it's no surprise that the course includes a badge system. With all the research and work I've done around badges, I haven't been a learner in a badged course, so I'm looking forward to the experience and chatting with others about it. Read more...
