Cedefop conference: time for action on work-based learning

http://www.cedefop.europa.eu/EN/Images-ContentManagement/BMj2Z-mCIAAJBVY_rdax_167x125.jpgParticipants in Cedefop’s conference on tackling skills mismatch agreed that Europe needs to implement policy initiatives on developing work-based learning as an answer to rising youth unemployment.
High-level participants in the two-day conference included European Union Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth Androulla Vassiliou, German Parliamentary Secretary of State, Federal Ministry of Education and Research, Thomas Rachel and Thessaloniki Mayor Yiannis Boutaris.
The event gathered more than 150 experts on vocational education and training from around the world, policy-makers from the European Commission and Member States as well as social partners’ representatives. In her keynote speech, Ms Vassiliou argued that the risk of a lost generation is ‘a real threat’ but added that ‘at EU-level we are working with the Member States to put Europe back on the road to jobs and growth’.
The Commissioner referred to the upcoming launch of a European Alliance for Apprenticeships as something to be ‘proud of’ and stressed that ‘it will be only by pooling the efforts of EU Member States, social partners, business, other relevant actors and the European Commission that we will be able to develop high-quality apprenticeships across Europe’.
Thomas Rachel told the conference that ‘the dual system is the backbone of Germany’s economic success’ and that his country wants to support its European partners ‘in their reform process’.
In his address, Thessaloniki Mayor Yiannis Boutaris highlighted the importance of vocational education and training, especially in countries like Greece, pointing out that ‘the reform should have started before the crisis’.
Cedefop Acting Director Christian Lettmayr said in the conference’s closing statement: ‘There may be limits to growth but there are no limits to change.’

Benefits of vocational education and training in Europe for people, organisations and countries

http://www.cedefop.europa.eu/EN/Images-ContentManagement/cover_4121_en_rdax_287x400.jpgPeople, organisations and governments invest in vocational education and training (VET) because of its positive outcomes, such as higher wages, improved productivity and economic growth. But VET also brings non-economic benefits, such as lower absenteeism and less crime. Research on VET’s benefits has focused on specific relationships, such its impact on productivity or health. Insufficient attention has been given how VET’s benefits interact in organisations. VET contributes directly to higher productivity by increasing skill levels, but also indirectly by increasing job satisfaction and lowering absenteeism. Using existing and new research covering more European countries, Cedefop’s publication argues that some of VET’s most important benefits are difficult to express in monetary terms. Organisations, individuals and governments, consequently, may not take full account of VET’s benefits when deciding to invest in it. A better understanding all of its benefits may not only influence the likelihood of investing in VET, but is important for organisations competing on the basis of high quality goods and services where skills and attitudes need to combine to bring success.

A Closer Look

http://www.elearningeuropa.info/sites/default/files/elearning_papers.pngThe Louvre Museum’s (France) "Closer Look" interactive multimedia tool allows users to see the details of an artwork through a magnifying glass, while commentaries and animations provide historical and artistic background.
Formal analysis and contextual research combine with close-ups and videos to give the viewer more information than they would get if they went to the museum and saw the work in person.
Some of the famous art pieces dissected using this multimedia tool are the Mona Lisa, the Winged Victory of Samothrace and the Seated Scribe.
The “Closer Look” commentaries and texts are available in French, English and Japanese. URL: Interactive tool.
