American students unprepared for college?

Just over a week ago College Board, a not-for-profit membership organization in the US, published data indicating that only 43% of the graduates from highschool in 2013 were academically prepared for college, a number that has remained the same in the last five years. While the US is often considered the leading country with respect to the quality of their higher education institutions, this report also shows great disparity within the educational system.  During the release of the report, Cyndie Schmeiser told Chronicle of HE reporters that the fact that the number has remained unchanged is worrisome: ”We are just not moving the needle as aggressively as it needs to be moved.” Read more...

World University Rankings 2012-2013 published last week

So, the top 10 includes Caltech, Oxford, Stanford, Harvard, MIT, Princeton, Cambridge, Imperial College of London, UC Berkeley, and Chicago. In essence the same list than last year with just Oxford and Stanford changing their places. The first non-US/non-UK institution was ETZ Zürich on 12th place. Read more...

Australian Higher Education – some current pressures on teaching and learning

The presentation focused on current pressures on teaching and learning in Australian Higher Education.
As a setting for the lecture,  Lyn Yates begins by describing the structure and governance, and students and teaching in Australian Higher Education.  The presentation then looks at the current Knowledge Building in Schooling and Higher Education: policy strategies and effects project. Survey on adult skills highlights need to improve education and training

http://ec.europa.eu/wel/template-2012/images/logo/logo_en.gifOne in five adults in Europe have low literacy and numeracy skills, and even a university degree in the same subject is no guarantee of the same level of skills in different countries, according to the first comprehensive international Survey of Adult Skills published today by the OECD and European Commission.
The survey assesses the literacy, numeracy and problem-solving ICT skills of adults aged 16-65 in 17 EU Member States - Belgium (Flanders), Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Cyprus, The Netherlands, Austria, Poland, Slovak Republic, Spain, Sweden and the UK (England/Northern Ireland), as well as in Australia, Canada, Japan, Republic of Korea, Norway and the United States. The findings underline the need to target investment at improving education and training to increase skills and employability in European countries. More...

EMT network — call for applications to join us

http://ec.europa.eu/wel/template-2012/images/logo/logo_en.gifOur 3rd call for applications to join the European Master's in Translation network is now open. Universities may apply if they run programmes that comply with EMT quality standards. Already a member? Then you must re-apply with a complete file to renew your membership — selection cannot be guaranteed.

  • deadline for applications: 16 December 2013
  • we will inform you of the outcome by 2 June 2014

EMT membership (or observer status) will take effect on the day of publication, lasting five years. We will monitor memberships and organise a mid-term review. The EMT Board will deal with potential cases of doubt about continued membership.

Why join?

By joining and contributing, your institution will benefit from a partnership with DG Translation and from the collective efforts of the network to achieve the following objectives:

  • enhance the status of translation as a profession
  • promote a quality label of qualifications
  • raise the profile of your programme
  • help those managing programmes to develop the right competences by:
    • strengthening programmes
    • re-assessing training methods
    • sharing competences and resources
    • negotiating with partner associations, institutions, and technical and commercial organisations as a network
    • building up cooperation links
    • taking part in an ongoing EMT forum on competences, criteria, resources, methods and requirements.

Eligibility

You can apply if your programme:

  • is already in place in (and authorised by) an EU country
  • is an authorised programme run by a university in certain non-EU countries (prospective new member countries, countries taking part in the European Neighbourhood Policy (ENP) or the European Economic Area (EEA), Switzerland and Russia). Programmes from these countries will be granted observer status.

Selection criteria

  • structure of the programme — objectives, credits and expected learning outcomes of the courses given
  • coverage of EMT competences

EMT competences

  • human resources — number of teaching staff and their qualifications
  • infrastructure assigned to the programme, e.g. premises, IT equipment, CAT-tools
  • career support & monitoring — including career guidance for students, internships, tracking of careers after graduation and employment statistics

Additional assets

We particularly welcome applications from programmes that demonstrate the following attributes — though these are not taken into account in the selection decision:

  • cooperation with higher education institutions at an international level or participation in national networks
  • effective quality assurance system
  • active in research

European Master’s in Translation – call for applications for 2014-19

http://ec.europa.eu/languages/images/content/promo_banners/button_quizz_en.pngUniversities currently have the opportunity to become part of the select EMT Network and join other institutions striving for excellence in their translation programmes. 
The third call for applications to join the European Master’s in Translation Network is now open. Universities may apply if they run programmes that comply with EMT quality standards. Existing members wishing to renew their membership must re-apply with a complete file — selection cannot be guaranteed.
The deadline for applications is 16 December 2013.
The results will be published by 2 June 2014.
EMT membership (or observer status) will take effect on the day the results are published and last for five years. No other selection procedure will be conducted during this period.
