Should I persuade my son to study a serious subject at university?

The Guardian homeBy . I don't want my son to make the same mistakes I did when choosing a subject – but I'm not sure he'll listen to me. There are 500 days until my son could leave home to go to university, wide-eyed and fully believing he's about to change the world. He's 16 years old, in the sixth form and nothing's going to stop him. Should I bite the bullet and try to persuade him that a "proper" job is where his future lies, one that is clear and defined? Welcoming Students… On The Day They Are Accepted?

By Brian Mathews. I’ve always been interested in reaching out to students as soon as possible. Conceptually I like that space in the summer – the metamorphosis from high school senior to college freshmen. It feels like a prime time to engage and cultivate a positive relationship. 
I use to consider the traditional route. Devise a fun print piece and have that item included in a welcome packet or other mailing. Of course incoming students receive a barrage of info and you’d really have to standout. They also have immediate (deadline-driven) needs like financial aid, housing, course selection, meal plans, and football tickets. Facebook groups are another possibility to start the conversation. Building Students' 'Cultural Capital'

Students who are the first in their families to attend college face a set of disadvantages in terms of college enrollment, persistence and graduation -- a vexing problem, to be sure, since virtually nothing can be done retroactively to change their demographic realities. But are there attributes that commonly flow from being a first-generation college student that colleges can address? 
That possibility formed the basis of a session Monday at the Council of Independent Colleges' annual chief academic officers' institute here, where academic and student affairs administrators from dozens of mostly small private colleges discussed the concept of "cultural capital" and the extent to which their institutions can (and should) seek to build it in students. Immatériel, non stockable, se consommant quand il se produit, et évaluable uniquement lorsque la prestation est terminée, l’enseignement entre dans la catégorie des services. Toute l’analyse critique que j’ai pu faire du service en France peut (et doit) donc s’appliquer à l’enseignement supérieur.
Les structures  (bâtiment, matériel mis à disposition) et les personnes, particulièrement les personnes « au contact » dont j’ai déjà parlé, permettent d’évaluer a priori la qualité du service et donc de la formation que l’étudiant recherche. Student complaints guidance ‘not always followed’, says OIA

Announcing the publication of its 2012 annual letters, which set out the complaints record of all universities under the OIA scheme, Rob Behrens, chief executive of the watchdog, said not all institutions were following the organisation’s guidance on when to declare student complaints.
