By G. Rendell. I'll admit it. I'm not anti-consumer, but I'm anti-consumerism. That is, I would love to see American society get to a point where most everyone has everything (s)he needs, but I'm adamantly opposed to consumption for consumption's sake. Or for the sole purpose of pumping up GDP on the backs of credit card holders. Spending money you don't have on products you don't need, which have been manufactured from a declining stock of natural resources extracted inefficiently using highly polluting forms of energy and generating several tons of waste for every ton of usable material just seems . . . well . . . kind of stupid. Of course, some may disagree. Read more...

Doing more with less
By G. Rendell. Environmental impact (in recent experience, negative environmental impact) correlates with consumption. It's less intuitively obvious, but economic and social sustainability challenges also correlate with consumption. Yet our students are conditioned to adjudge their happiness on the basis of how much stuff they have which, in the default instance, equates to how much they consume. Read more...
Think Green: education and environmental awareness
By Tracey Burns and Roxanne Kovacs, Directorate for Education and Skills. The environment is a hot topic in the press and classrooms across the world and much has been said about the need for action to protect our planet. If current trends in climate change continue, temperatures could increase between 3 and 6 degrees Celsius by 2050. Such large temperature increases would lead to water shortages for billions of people, reduce agricultural yields, increase malnutrition related deaths by millions and lead to the extinction of a large part of animal species. Transforming the campus with car-free pedestrian zones - Schools are unpaving paradise and creating a stronger sense of place
By Tim Johnson. A few years ago, Gould Street in downtown Toronto was a favourite shortcut, a two-lane fast-track out of the city core, used by stressed drivers as a way to circumvent the gridlock of Yonge Street and bypass its intersection with Dundas Street, one of Canada’s busiest corners. Now, Gould Street is the pedestrian-friendly heart of Ryerson University. Just one block northeast of Yonge and Dundas, two long blocks of Gould serve as an urban oasis, a sanctuary cordoned off from street traffic where nary a horn nor revving engine can be heard. More...
Home and away
By G. Rendell. If your institution has signed the American College and University Presidents' Climate Commitment (or, perhaps, even if it hasn't), somebody on your campus periodically inventories greenhouse gas emissions. Technically, there are six "Kyoto gases" that should be inventoried, but for most campuses only three really matter -- carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide. So the short answer to "what gases do you inventory?" is a three-item list. But the longer answer, and the more complex one, is more important. Read more...

Do students really choose colleges based on how green they are?
