Sustainability commandment #4

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/styles/blog_landing/public/green.jpg?itok=D8D3DXB7By G. Rendell. If advanced society is to continue, much less flourish, it must do so on this planet.  Yet preservation of the planet and its natural resources isn’t what we practice, and it isn’t what we teach (or preach, as you prefer).  Instead, what we teach is that consumption of natural resources is the mechanism of the good life, and that ever faster, ever more efficient consumption is the objective of good business. Read more...

How are colleges retooling for sustainability

University Business LogoBy Joe Kunkle. Higher education institutions can venerate or perpetuate hallowed traditions. Institutions have had a reputation for infrastructure conservatism. William Rees’ 2003 article “Impeding Sustainability? The Ecological Footprint of Higher Education” states “the real challenge for higher education is to help articulate an alternative life-sustaining worldview.” Today, campuses lead the transformation to sustainability, demonstrating its value nationwide. Teaching to a Third Commandment

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/styles/blog_landing/public/green.jpg?itok=D8D3DXB7By G. Rendell. The economy exists to serve society, not the other way around.  Thus, maintain an economy which is sufficient to provide the goods and services required to support happy, healthy living for all members of society.  And do it in such a manner that the resources consumed by economic activity don't exceed the levels which the planet can supply indefinitely.
This third sustainability commandment consists in two parts -- meet needs, and don't exceed resource supply.  The latter portion is largely a corollary to the first commandment (the one about there being only one planet's worth of planet); the generalities are pretty simple, and the specifics will be detailed in future posts. Read more...

Death and taxis: Why the Green Growth and Sustainable Development Forum matters

By Patrick Love. That’s the “fuel poverty” the February 2013 OECD survey of the UK economy mentions, so the problem obviously hasn’t gone away. It sounds incredible, given that GDP per capita has risen from less than $15,000 to over $35,000 in real terms since the Electric Flats were built. However, the expansion of the economy hasn’t benefited everybody equally and while many have done well, inequality is actually growing worldwide according to our latest figures. That’ll be the first thing discussed at the Green Growth and Sustainable Development Forum taking place at OECD headquarters on 13-14 November. This year’s theme is “Addressing the social implications of green growth”. Read more...

A sustainability literacy test, what for? by J.-C. Carteron
In order to enter the most prestigious universities, it is often asked of students to prove that they have a certain level of English. In order to be admitted to the best MBAs, other institutions check the marks in performance tests (analyses, problem solving, understanding of what one reads...). In order to ensure that they offer their future graduates an education that enables them to be aware of the stakes of sustainable development, it seems logical that, in the long run, the best institutions could ask students to have a minimum level of knowledge in the field of sustainable development (SD).
