Setback for southern node for Pan African University

http://t3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQOQ2e8mceWyPVVFcJDlyvxthNhmSR7fCNS1SUDStQIOlwqvtcjS6qaiABy Ishmael Tongai. A proposal to site the fifth node for the Pan African University, or PAU, on the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius has been deemed ineligible. The African Union, which is backing the initiative, said Mauritius fell into the continental body’s Eastern Africa region.
“Mauritius is in the Eastern Africa geographic region of the African Union and will therefore not host the PAU Institute for space sciences, because Eastern Africa is already hosting the PAU Institute for Basic Sciences, Technology and Innovation,” Beatrice Njenga, head of the human resources, science and technology department at the African Union Commission, told University World News last week. Open Education Is the way to the Future Because it Employs all Means of Technology and Telecommunications

logoEducation expert and head of the Open University Sudan, Faisal Abdallah Alhaj answers our questions in this interview
Introduction
Since the 1970s, different kinds of distant education were introduced in Sudan through different and voluntary organizations on several levels. These levels included literacy education and basic, graduate and post graduate education. These efforts were made so as to meet the pressing needs of the society for education.
Some of the institutions which had adopted this system have achieved considerable success and others adopted a different kind of distant education known as affiliation, a method which lacks a number of the elements leading to accomplishing high quality education goals. More...

Student loan systems restructured across East Africa

http://enews.ksu.edu.sa/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/UWN.jpgBy Gilbert Nganga. Major reforms are looming for student loan schemes in East Africa as governments seek to raise enrolments and ease the fees burden on parents. Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Rwanda have announced plans to restructure their student loan systems or are already doing so, and are also aiming to raise more funds and achieve efficiencies in loan recovery. More...

How teachers in Africa are failed by mobile learning

SciDevBy Niall Winters. Only projects that work with existing education systems will improve learning and cut poverty, says Niall Winters.
You've no doubt heard of the mobile phone revolution sweeping Sub-Saharan Africa — perhaps mobile money transfer, or mHealth. The hope is that mobile technologies will transform lives by improving health, education, finance and women's position in society.
However, as knowledge management expert Piers Bocock notes, there is a vast disconnect between the companies that produce and market these technologies and on-the-ground implementers — with the hype perhaps best exemplified by former US President Bill Clinton. More...

Collaborative Networks are crucial to improve higher education in Somaliland

300px-Flag_of_Somaliland_svgGraduation Ceremony at one of the Universities in Somaliland
Higher education and research in Somaliland have largely been neglected internally. If Somaliland is to join the continental & global knowledge community as an equal partner, it must revolutionize its research, education and training systems. This does not simply mean as Ministry of education in Somaliland believes taking money from Aid Agencies, INGO’s and pumping money into individual institutions with a bias and nepotism. This can help raise the profile of single universities but will do little to improve the system as a whole. More...

East Africa Forum Pledges to Harmonise Higher Education Across the Region

By Anne Kiruku. The challenges of differing programmes of higher education across the region will be a thing of the past when the recommendations of the just concluded Academia-Private Sector Forum and Exhibitions 2013 in Nairobi are implemented.
The forum made a recommendation to create a common qualifications framework for harmonization of courses across the region and mutual recognition of qualifications. Many graduates have complained of inability to find employment in East African Community partner states due to non-recognition by partner states.
Regional integration cannot be attained if employees cannot move across the region to seek employment and exchange knowledge and innovations with citizens of partner states. More...
