http://www.iol.co.za/polopoly_fs/iol-news5-1.989381!/image/464471284.png_gen/derivatives/absolute/464471284.pngBy Nontobeko Mtshali. As university application deadlines for first-year entrants start drawing to a close, the Department of Higher Education and Training is readying itself to provide alternatives for the hundreds of thousands of prospective students who’ll be left out in the cold.
The number of applications received by many of the major universities have already far exceeded the number of spaces available - despite the fact that there are still four weeks to go before deadline at the end of September.
In Gauteng, Wits University has received more than 34 000 first-year applications. The institution, however, can only accommodate 5 500 first-year students. Read more...

New jobs site – Higher Education in Africa Recruitment

http://enews.ksu.edu.sa/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/UWN.jpgUniversity World News is delighted to announce the ‘soft’ launch of an African higher education jobs site. Universities across Africa – and indeed those around the world – looking to recruit academics and higher education professionals are now easily able to post job ads, at very reasonable prices and reaching a large audience, on the Higher Education in Africa Recruitment, or HEAR, site. People looking for jobs may post their CVs for free.
The coming weeks will be a ‘live test’ phase for the HEAR site, which is an initiative of the Africa Edition. Higher education institutions, other organisations and individuals will be able to post jobs while the site is being streamlined and its functionality improved and finalised.
Those wishing to negotiate job listings and-or advertisements directly with University World News, and have us upload the associated material, should contact UWN Africa’s Sales Director Debbie van Heerden at:
Email: debbie.vanheerden@gmail.com
Telephone: +27 (0)83 269 9365

Lessons and challenges for higher education in Africa

http://enews.ksu.edu.sa/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/UWN.jpgThere appears to be growing willingness in Africa to provide better oversight to higher education institutions. But academics, including vice-chancellors, are “not taking up the challenge to domesticate and harness the spaces they are given”. This was one of the lessons learned at a convening of higher education leaders and researchers from across the continent.
Three recommendations flowed from the convening. One was for a continental summit on higher education, the second was for higher education to embrace an open data policy, and the third was to strengthen the role and effectiveness of higher education councils.
The “Higher Education Policy, Leadership and Governance Grantee Convening”, held from 14-15 May in Nairobi, brought together grantee organisations of the Carnegie Corporation of New York working in higher education in Africa. More...

Dialogue series sparks conversations on transformation

http://enews.ksu.edu.sa/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/UWN.jpgTrustAfrica, a pan-African foundation launched six years ago in Senegal, has been organising higher education dialogues in several African countries to provide a neutral and safe space for conversations on higher education transformation.
TrustAfrica’s grantee project activity report on the Policy Dialogues Series on Higher Education in Africa was presented at a Carnegie Corporation of New York-sponsored convening in Nairobi on “Higher Education Policy, Leadership and Governance” in Africa.
Formed as a governance and policy organisation, the body has initiated a number of projects and processes, and been the catalyst for collaborations and partnerships.
Its higher education project offers a platform to strengthen the African higher education sector, and recognises the long-term presence of key players like researchers, academics, the private sector, civil society, policy-makers and various institutions whose work has been critical in shaping Africa’s higher education landscape.
TrustAfrica initiated the higher education dialogue series, under project leader Dr Omano Edigheji, in the hope that multiple stakeholders would unite to set the education agenda. More...
