Turkey: Center for Higher Education in the Region

By Bilal Kalkan. Turkey is a leader for higher education in the region. In the last two decades, Turkey has become famous for its universities, and has received many awards in different disciplines.
We all know that success is often a result of education and every human being deserves quality education. Turkey, as a leader in the region, has a vision not only educating young Turks, but also for opening its doors to international students. Compared to European and American schools, education is also free of charge in Turkish public schools. Turkey focuses on increasing the quality and quantity of all education services, formal and informal, by having institutions in every city in Turkey.
Through educational investments, many Turkish universities were listed in the world's best universities list, such as Boğazici University, Istanbul University and Middle East Technical University. More...

One-third of Dutch university staff come from outside the country

Dutch universities get nearly all their extra personnel from abroad, particularly from Germany and China, and one-third of academic staff have a non-Dutch passport.
The information comes from as yet unpublished figures from the Dutch university association VSNU reported in the Volkskrant. The figures cover the years 2007 to the end of 2013.
In that period, virtually all the growth in university jobs, around 3,000 positions, went to PhD students, researchers and professors from abroad. The number of Dutch personnel remained stable at 20,000. See more...

The mathematician in question - Maryam Mirzakhani - is Iranian, and recently became the first woman to win the Fields Medal for her pioneering work in the field. President Rouhani tweeted a message expressing his delight at the news. "Congrats to #MaryamMirzakhani on becoming the first ever woman to win the #FieldsMedal, making us Iranians very proud," he said. More...

Australian students to soon intern in Indian companies

Undergraduate students in Australian universities may soon have an opportunity to pursue internship programmes in India under a new initiative. Number of foreign students continues to rise

The New Prague PostThe numbers of students from Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan and Vietnam at Czech universities have increased steeply over the past 10 years, and one of the main reasons is that those studying in Czech pay no tuition fees, daily Právo writes today.
In 2013, 4,312 Russians studied at Czech universities, while it was 416 a decade earlier. As the Russian language is related to Czech, Russians easily learn Czech in one year, the paper writes. The number of Ukrainian students has been growing gradually from 458 in 2003 to 2,019 last year.
Ten years ago, there were only 75 students from Kazakhstan at Czech universities, but in 2013 their number reached 1,368. The number of Vietnamese and Belarusian students rose from 178 to 1,045 and from 183 to 617 in the same period, respectively.
As far as EU countries are concerned, most students come from the United Kingdom (505), Germany (436), Portugal (413), Poland (360) and Greece (355). Other countries from which people have arrived to study in the Czech Republic are Norway (359), Malaysia (306), Azerbaijan (212) and Israel (134). Read more...

Higher education report card for the president

When President Obama took office in 2009, he proposed the U.S. regain its leadership in higher education by increasing college degree attainment from 40 percent to 60 percent, adding an additional 10 million Americans ages 25-34 with an associate or bachelor’s degree. Using government data and third party survey results, we have evaluated the president’s progress in moving toward his “Big Goal” along four dimensions: enrollments, degrees, cost, and advocacy.
