Student loans should be for life, say universities

The ConversationBy Gemma Ware. Students should be given a lifetime loan allocation that they can use for different undergraduate and postgraduate courses, according to new proposals put forward by a group of universities. The University Alliance, a group of 22 British higher education institutions, has added its voice to the debate on how to adjust the current student loan system, with a new report putting forward proposals for a new Higher Education Loan Programme – or HELP – aimed at extending student loans to postgraduate study and part-time undergraduate learners. Grand challenges for mathematics education

http://chronicle.com/img/photos/biz/castingoutnines-45.pngBy Robert Talbert. On Twitter this week, someone sent out a link to this survey from the NCTM asking users to submit their ideas for “grand challenges” for mathematics education in the coming years. I forget the precise definition and parameters for a “grand challenge” and I can’t go back to the beginning of the survey now that I’ve completed it, but the gist is that a grand challenge should be “extremely difficult but doable”, should make a positive impact on a large group of mathematics students, and should be grounded in sound pedagogical research. Guest post: Blending and flipping modern architecture

http://chronicle.com/img/photos/biz/castingoutnines-45.pngBy Robert Talbert. How many of you reading this have a formal dining room in your home? A separate room, not just a dining area in a kitchen or great room. How often does this dining room get used for its intended purpose? Daily? Weekly? A couple times a year on major holidays? This is how I begin my Architecture, Technology and Society, 1750-present class. More...

The Third Student-Loan Mess: Outrage and Crushing Debt

By . We call crushing debt the third student-loan mess. Postgraduation debt levels are now such a constant part of public discussions about student loans that it is a little surprising to recognize that it really did not attract much attention until the mid-1990s. Suddenly, people began realizing that some borrowers owed five- and even six-figure student-loan debts. More...

Reimagining the Undergraduate Experience: 4 Provocative Ideas

By . How can we reimagine the undergraduate college experience in the future? That was the question at the heart of my column last week on the overworked bachelor’s degree, which generated plenty of discussion, agreement, and pushback in the comments. It was also a question at the center of a yearlong exercise at Stanford University’s Hasso Plattner Institute of Design, also known as the d.school. More...

Cursive Is an Endangered Species

By . Over the past decade or so, something big has been happening in public schools throughout the United States: Instruction in cursive writing has all but disappeared, cut from curricula as schools bring more technology (and keyboarding) into the classroom. The new Common Core Standards for education omit training in cursive handwriting altogether. More...

Reflections From a Global Provost

By . The following is by Peter N. Stearns, provost of George Mason University. Mr. Stearns plans to retire this summer after more than 14 years in the role.
One of the reasons I wanted to become the provost of George Mason was the opportunity to help shape a more global university. Of course, given Mason’s Northern Virginia location near the nation’s capital and faculty talent, a good bit was going on already, but as an institution we had the chance to accelerate global education in a number of ways. That effort formed a key part of what proved to be an exhilarating job. More...

Use Copy for Cloud Storage Backup and File Sharing

http://chronicle.com/img/photos/biz/profhacker-45.pngBy . Recent announcements are showing a trend in cheaper storage solutions and cloud backups. Google recently updated its pricing for Drive storage and now offers 15 GB for free and incredibly cheap prices for 100 GB, 1 TB, and 10TB+. At WWDC, Apple announced changes to its iCloud service towards a more Dropbox-like experience and revealed a new pricing model that includes a baseline 20 GB for $0.99 per month. And just this week, Amazon revealed its plans for unlimited storage for photographs for those purchasing the new Fire Phone. Cloud storage, it seems, is everywhere and dirt cheap. More...

On Deadlines

http://chronicle.com/img/photos/biz/profhacker-45.pngBy . Some hard (and sometimes hard-won) truths about deadlines, academic and otherwise:
Some deadlines are really, truly, firm. And some are not.
Some deadlines come with negative consequences for not meeting them in a timely fashion. Some do not.
Some negative consequences take physical or visible forms, such as late fees, delayed diplomas, or cancelled accounts. Some negative consequences are psychological and emotional, such as feelings of embarrassment, guilt, or shame.
Deadlines and their flexibility are, like other resources, typically unevenly distributed (within an organization, within a profession, within the world more broadly). This means that some people have more ability to renegotiate a deadline than others do. More...

Survey on Digital Games Use in the Classroom

http://chronicle.com/img/photos/biz/profhacker-45.pngBy . A survey of grade school educators on using games in the classroom was recently released by the Games and Learning Publishing Council (funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation). While this survey isn’t directly applicable to those of us working in higher education, the adoption and success of games methods in K-12 will impact responses to those approaches when we try them in our classes with those students years later.
