By Hans-Georg van Liempd (EAIE President). As the year draws to a close, there is a tendency to look back at what happened over the past 12 months and reflect on the year’s achievements. What about the future? Can developments in the past be used to predict what will happen in the years to come? There is no crystal ball that provides effective insights into future developments. However, I’ve come up with five key areas which I believe will have a big impact on international higher education in 2014.
1)    Corporate social responsibility and internationalisation
For many private businesses and non-profit organisations, corporate social responsibility (CSR) is  becoming common practice. The customer expects that organisations take care of the environment and of the social impact of doing business. Just like internationalisation, corporate social responsibility can be described as a continuing process. Méconnues, les ETI* constituent une catégorie d'entreprises " intermédiaires " entre les PME et les grandes entreprises, dont le poids dans l'économie et l'emploi des cadres est important. 
Des entreprises très dynamiques. La France compte environ 4 600 entreprises de taille intermédiaire, soit 5 % du total des entreprises. Bien que peu nombreuses, elles occupent une place centrale dans l’économie nationale, réalisant 26 % des dépenses de R&D et générant un tiers du chiffre d’affaires à l’export.

Les entreprises de taille intermédiaire (ETI) emploient un salarié sur quatre et 30 % des cadres du secteur privé. En 2012, elles ont contribué à créer 16 000 nouveaux postes cadres, soit 45 % de la création totale d’emplois cadres. C’est deux fois plus que les PME, pourtant bien plus nombreuses. En effet, si les ETI bénéficient plutôt d’un marché de l’emploi cadre dynamique qui leur permet de se développer, les PME s’inscrivent davantage dans une logique de renouvellement des départs.
