Senators Want Loan Discharges for Corinthian Students

A group of 13 Senate Democrats want the U.S. Department of Education to discharge federal student loans for some current and former students of Corinthian Colleges. In a letter to Arne Duncan, the Senators urged immediate discharges for any borrowers who are covered by lawsuits filed by federal and state agencies against the troubled for-profit chain, which is being dismantled. Big Ten to Punish Noncompliance With Concussion Standards

The Big Ten Conference announced Monday that it would punish member universities that fail to comply with its toughened standards on monitoring and preventing athletes' concussions, CBS Sports reported. With its action, which was approved Sunday by the presidents of the league's university members, the conference has now done what the National Collegiate Athletic Association has been criticized for not doing: moving "from best practices and minimum requirements for schools to regulatory standards" imposed on colleges, as the Big Ten said in its statement about the policy change. Next Showdown Over TA Unions at Private Universities?

The Graduate Workers of Columbia on Friday told Columbia University that a majority of teaching assistants and research assistants have signed cards asking that the United Auto Workers local be recognized as a union. A statement from the union noted that if the university does not voluntarily agree to collective bargaining, the UAW could ask the National Labor Relations Board to conduct an election and (assuming a majority of the graduate students back the UAW) certify the union. Artwork at Iowa, Intended as Anti-Racism, Viewed as Racist

A visiting fellow at the University of Iowa placed a sculpture that he views as a critique of racism on the campus last week, but removed it when the university noted that he didn't have permission and many students said that they found the work offensive, The Des Moines Register reported.
