King's College London has decided to rebrand itself simply as King's London, to the horror of many students and alumni, Times Higher Education reported. Administrators say that the change is needed to end confusion about whether King's is a college or university.

Ball State University’s Board of Trustees are worried that a controversial plan to weed out low-performing tenured faculty members is moving along too slowly, The Star Press reported. Terry King, Ball State’s provost, said last academic year that an official policy would be submitted by this fall, but he told trustees this month that the university needs more time. Read more...

The number of colleges that partner with financial institutions to offer credit cards has dropped by nearly 70 percent since 2009, according to new data from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. The consumer bureau on Monday released its annual report disclosing which colleges have arrangements with credit card providers to offer their products on campuses or to other university-affiliated groups. The American Council on Education on Monday announced that 25 colleges have agreed to accept all or most transfer credit from students who have completed courses from a council-created pool of 100 low-cost online courses. The Education Department's Office for Civil Rights has closed an investigation of a Florida scholarship program, finding no civil rights violations, The Miami Herald reported. The investigation was based on complaints that the use of SAT and ACT scores for parts of the scholarship program had a negative impact on black and Latino students' ability to win the full scholarships. With the release of the Obama administration’s much-anticipated framework for rating the nation’s colleges and universities, commentators already are weighing in on the yawning gulf between the stated intention of ensuring “a quality education of real value” and the severe limitations of the metrics being considered.
