Official launch of the International Consortium of Research Staff Associations

http://www.universityaffairs.ca/images/BlogTheBlackHole.pngBy . Last week, the International Consortium of Research Staff Associations (ICoRSA) was launched in connection with the VITAE Research Staff Conference. Forged in the fire that burns in the bellies of early career researchers with low salaries, little stability and poor career prospects, this organization aims to better the researcher profession by linking the individual (often national) organizations to each other. ICoRSA has been busy in its first year of activity – they have successfully engaged postdoctoral and researcher organizations from across the world (including the Canadian Association of Postdoctoral Scholars) and their current board members reflect a good mix of these organizations. Research needs more poetry, not more cash

Times Higher EducationBy Gary Thomas. ‘Big money’ grants foster ‘bookkeeping’ work at the expense of small-scale but potentially groundbreaking efforts, says Gary Thomas.
Dwight D. Eisenhower took up a good proportion of his farewell address to the American nation in 1961 worrying about universities. The departing president said that the university was “historically the fountainhead of free ideas and scientific discovery”. His big regret, however, was that money, not discovery, had become the principal target for staff at universities. A government contract had become “a substitute for intellectual curiosity”. More...

How to (Not) Talk about Your Research

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/styles/blog_landing/public/Screen%20Shot%202011-12-12%20at%2012.29.48%20PM.png?itok=ITDqfJNPBy Erin Bedford. It’s happened to the best of us. First, the question: “so, what is your research on?” Then, the blank stare as you try to explain. And finally, the uninterested but polite nod and smile. The other day, one of my past classmates asked me what I was working on. When I was given the blank stare from someone with an identical background to me, I realized that I have a problem. I’m tired of not being understood. No more hiding behind excuses like “my work is too complicated” or “they don’t actually care.” It’s time to figure out why we aren’t understood and what we can do to change that. What mistakes do we make when talking about our research?
