Reflecting on reflection

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Reflecting on reflection
Harold Jarche, 2014/09/02
I have often described the 'Downes Theory of Education' (which is not original to me, and which is too simple to be called a theory) as follows: "To teach is to model and demonstrate; to learn is to practice and reflect." So much writing focuses on the first pair of activities; the bulk of educational literature is focused on how to teach. More...

L'ANR recale 90% des projets scientifiques

http://sciences.blogs.liberation.fr/test/images/logo_libe.pngPar Sylvestre Huet. Voir l'article...

'Dirty Money'

HomeBy Charlie Tyson. People get furious with Cynthia Jones. Philosophy is known as the blood sport of the humanities, and Jones, an associate professor of philosophy at the University of Texas-Pan American, doesn’t shrink from conflict. But she’d been sparring not just with fellow philosophers in seminar rooms, but with people from all corners of her campus. Read more...

By Stephen Downes - Stephen's Web. Recent Research Review -- Reviewed (and Lamented)
Will Thalheimer, Will at Work Learning, 2014/08/22

I will admit that this article is an excellent read and that if you are in the field and haven't read it, you should correct this oversight immediately. If you really really don't have time this overview from Will Thalheimer will do nicely. More...

Academic Research is a Total Pain in the ... Neck

By Gregory Semenza - Chronicle Vitae. One morning about a year ago, I nearly spit out my coffee upon reading the claim that “sitting is the new smoking.” In summarizing the gist of recent research on inactivity, the Runner’s World article wasn’t mincing words: “The more you sit, the poorer your health and the earlier you may die, no matter how fit you are.” I leapt out of my chair and began pacing the room, trying to rewind the damage I’d just done to myself. I’ve long been aware of the fact that an hour at my desk aggravates my back way more than an hour of lifting weights or playing with my kids, but I hadn’t known that my reading and writing were literally killing me. Research is ‘no panacea’ for development, finds DFID

Research is “not a panacea” for development in low-income countries despite making “important and significant contributions to socioeconomic development”, according to an impact review of public research by the UK Department for International Development.
Evidence does not back commonly held assumptions about how research leads to change, for example by directly benefiting economic growth and the quality of higher education, the report says. More...

Failure to Replicate

HomeBy Charlie Tyson. The word “replication” has, of late, set many a psychologist’s teeth on edge. Experimental psychology is weathering a credibility crisis, with a flurry of fraud allegations and retracted papers. Marc Hauser, an evolutionary psychologist at Harvard University, left academe amid charges of scientific misconduct. Read more...
