The Canadian Council on L:earning has released a report urging a focus on adult learning. While I agree with the idea that we should promote a "learning culture" I simply don't see it as a problem that "two-thirds of Canadians do not take part in any formal learning activities." We don't need classes any more, we just need good access to the internet, some relevant online resources, and the time to use them. And while I agree that "There are clear and well-substantiated links between lifelong learning, productivity and innovation," I don't like the focus on adult learners as "workers". More...

As somebody whose job description is basically 'to innovate' a report like this is almost personal. Do we really not innovate in Canada? I see so much evidence to the contrary! But then when I look at the indices, I see the explanation: "Fewer scientific articles are published in Canada, fewer patents are granted." Does the Conference Board of Canada feel my work - which is government funded but which produces very few patents or formal publications - to be a "stunningly poor" showing? Well maybe. For the short term, Horizon is predicting mobile learning and analytics. Medium term sees mixed reality and artificial intelligence. And get ready, because in 4-5 years we'll see blockchain and virtual assistants (that will be a surprise to anyone who bought a Google Home with Bitcoin). It's not that these predictions are unhelpful, they're also too vague to be useful. Consider 'blockchain'.
