Google Scholar Library

By Amy Cavender. Among Google’s tools for getting work done, we here at ProfHacker have long been fans of Google Scholar. It’s a useful tool for finding good sources, it can be used to track citations to your work, and setting up an alert in Google Scholar is a great way to keep track of new publications on a topic. Google keeps developing the service, and a few weeks ago, they addd a new feature: Google Scholar Library. That blog entry and the service’s help page explain quite well how to use this new feature, so I won’t go into detail about that here. More...

Lighten Your Inbox in 10 Minutes with Unroll.Me

By Brian Croxall. With the close of the semester, you’re probably doing what you can to get your email inbox under control now that some of your colleagues have left the campus and your students have finished their finals. Email is, of course, the gift that keeps on giving. So it’s perhaps appropriate as we approach the end of the year that I make a gift to you of a fabulous new (and free!) service I discovered that will radically reduce the number of emails you receive on a daily basis: Unroll.Me. Which conferences?
How do you decide?
I’ve been trying to figure out which conference (or conferences) to attend in 2014. Read more...

Mobile Learning Week

The theme of Mobile Learning Week (MLW) 2014 is teachers. During the symposium, this overarching theme will be split into three main tracks: mobile pedagogy, professional development, and policy.
To ensure the event is relevant to a wide variety of stakeholders, “teachers” is broadly defined and encompasses educators of all stripes, including those who serve children, youth or adults in formal or informal contexts. As in past years, MLW 2014 will consist of four separate events, anchored by a two-day symposium. More...

More...

Top Ed-Tech Trends of 2013: Hardware

https://s3.amazonaws.com/hackedu/audreywatters_75.jpgBy Audrey Watters. Part 6 of my Top 10 Ed-Tech Trends of 2013 series. We spend a lot of time in ed-tech talking about the Internet, about the Web, about software. But it all relies on hardware. And I think this was a year in which we saw schools really (re)embrace and (re)up their hardware procurement. I add the re- prefix because this effort isn't new. I often exort folks to read Papert's Mindshift. I should add: read Cuban's Oversold and Underused. Way back in 2011, I chose the iPad as one of the top ed-tech trends of the year. I noted that I’d penned an op-ed in The Huffington Post in January, proclaiming it would be the year of the (educational) tablet. But I was wrong. It was the year of the iPad. More...

Google Reads Your Emails?

http://chronicle.com/img/photos/biz/linguafranca-45.pngBy Geoffrey Pullum. Microsoft’s astonishingly scurrilous campaign to damage confidence in Gmail is still active after nearly 10 years. Large ads in magazines repeat content from the Google-baiting website www.scroogled.com, which is dedicated solely to promoting fear of privacy invasions. More...

http://chronicle.com/img/photos/biz/wiredcampus-45.pngBy Hannah Winston. Students still fall through the cracks. A new report looks at the plethora of digital tools marketed to students to help them get into and make the most of college. It tackles individual websites and mobile apps, like College Confidential and Find Tuition, and provides a comprehensive look at what each offers. More...

Why I'm Not Replacing My iPad

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/default/server_files/styles/blog_landing/public/technology_and_learning_blog_header.jpg?itok=aQthgJ91By Joshua Kim. This week I changed jobs at my institution. As part of this shift I had to return all of my devices to the team that I was leaving.
One of the devices that I returned was an iPad mini.
The question that I’ve been pondering this week is should I replace the iPad?
I’m typing this post on a new MacBook Air (feels just like the old MacBook Air), and while I wavered a bit between the snazzy 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display there was no doubt that I needed a laptop to do my work. Read more...
