Open Access and Academic Freedom

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/all/themes/ihecustom/logo.jpgBy Cary Nelson. Over the last decade there has been a rapid evolution toward increased scholarly publishing online. Much of it remains proprietary publishing available only through paid access, but there are now a number of peer-reviewed gold access online scholarly journals, and book publishers commonly make a table of contents and a sample chapter freely available. Google meanwhile has made the complete texts of millions of public domain books available for free. And there are countless websites devoted to more narrowly defined online publishing projects. 3 Ways to Boost College Access

http://www.insidehighered.com/sites/all/themes/ihecustom/logo.jpgBy Justin Draeger. Today the Senate is holding a hearing on student aid and college access with a focus on simplification, in advance of the upcoming reauthorization of the Higher Education Act. Focusing on streamlining federal student aid and making the various programs more flexible is a well-reasoned approach in a fiscal environment where increases in federal funding for the programs appear unlikely. Here are three recommendations policy makers can apply immediately to simplify programs and increase college access. Read more...

The Access Gap

Sutton TrustBy John O’Leary. Students with professional parents are about three times more likely to go to the top public universities in England, Australia and the United States than those from working-class families, according to research published today. At the most selective US private universities, the gap is even wider.
The report, by Dr John Jerrim, of the Institute of Education at the University of London, was commissioned for a Sutton Trust summit on advancing access to leading universities around the world. The two-day meeting will be opened by Dr Vince Cable, Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills. More...

Affordability and Accessibility in Higher Education

http://s.huffpost.com/images/v/logos/bpage/college.gif?31By . As students begin the process of applying for college entrance for next fall, there is continued public discussion about the cost of higher education. A recent article in the New York Times cites a study that found that despite the rise in tuition sticker prices, the amount students actually pay has remained stable over the past decade. That fact, however, is too often missed and the pressure remains to contain costs in order to ensure that a college education is affordable and accessible. More...

Time for a global movement for higher education access

http://enews.ksu.edu.sa/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/UWN.jpgBy Graeme Atherton. It is almost universally accepted that participation in higher education across the world will grow exponentially in the next 20 years. The OECD predicts that there will be more than 400 million students in tertiary education by 2030. What is less clear is who these students will be, what backgrounds they will come from and whether the historical patterns of inequality in higher education participation will be in any way reduced by this expansion or will worsen.

http://profile.ak.fbcdn.net/hprofile-ak-ash1/373178_414034881966998_856445633_q.jpgPar Laurent Favreuille.

Office for Fair Access (OFFA)

http://www.guninetwork.org/utils_images/guni-1/image_preview

The Office for Fair Access (OFFA) is an independent public body that helps safeguard and promote fair access to higher education. The main way they do this is by approving and monitoring 'access agreements'. All English universities and colleges wanting to charge higher fees must have an 'access agreement'.
