Adult Learners and their College Experience: The Challenges Colleges Face

Evolllution Logo, click to return to homepageBy Barry Thomas - Evolllution. It’s interesting to consider what college instructors and professors are likely to see when they meet their new students in September. Will all their students be approximately the same age, or will they see a diverse mixture of age groups with a number of adult learners? It is difficult to estimate a response to these questions. Three Differentiators That Help IEPs Stand Out From The Crowd

Evolllution Logo, click to return to homepageBy Scott Stevens - Evolllution. In the more than thirty years I have devoted to the field of English as a Second Language (ESL), the role and status of Intensive English Programs (IEPs) have changed profoundly. In the 1980s, IEPs were relegated to hand-me-down space no other program wanted: dank basements or musty attics. ESL faculty were, for the most part, poorly paid adjuncts to whom security, promotion and living wages were denied. More...

A university board, the provost, your team as individuals and a unit, other schools or units within your institution, local employers, workforce investment boards, Department of Education, your students, your prospective students. You can probably continue this list to include several others. More...

Lessons From a For-Profit: SWOT Analyses

Evolllution Logo, click to return to homepageBy Terry Rawls - Evolllution. In this series we’re exploring the lessons that traditional institutions and successful for-profit institutions can share with each other. I’ve had a few requests to take a closer look at a common tool called a SWOT, to see how it can be used in higher education. So here we go. More...

Book review: Teaching and Learning in Digital Worlds

http://www.tonybates.ca/wp-content/uploads/asssociates.jpgBy . However, this doesn’t quite capture for me what the book is really about, so I will discuss a little more closely below some of the themes addressed by individual chapters.
As a point of clarification, I will use the term ‘immersive environments’ as a shorthand to describe simulations, games and virtual reality, a point I will come back to in my comments at the end of this post. More...

Who are your online students?

http://www.tonybates.ca/wp-content/uploads/asssociates.jpgBy . This is a very brief summary of a 53 page report packed with data, which I strongly recommend reading in full, especially if you are involved with marketing or planning online programs or courses, but here is a brief tasting menu:
1. Competition for online students is increasing
Data from the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center (2015) show that college enrollments [in the USA] declined by close to 2%, yielding 18.6 million college students today. About 5.5 million of these students are studying partially or fully online. At the same time, competition for these online students is increasing. Between 2012 and 2013, 421 institutions launched online programs for the first time, an increase of 23% to 2,250 institutions. More...

The OBR responds to HEPI on student numbers

Résultat de recherche d'images pour "hepi.ac.uk"In mid-July, I blogged on the seemingly ever-changing forecasts from the Office for Budget Responsibility (or OBR) on future student numbers, which can be read here.
The OBR has treated that blog as a formal ‘request for further detail’. I wholeheartedly welcome their willingness to respond to my comments and their response can be read here: http://budgetresponsibility.org.uk/wordpress/docs/Student-numbers-July-2015-Economic-and-fiscal-outlook.pdf.
But, while their clarification is welcome, it ignores the point that it would make sense for the OBR to start considering evidence from abroad (particularly Australia) when assessing the potential impact of the removal of student number controls on future student numbers, as well as to talk to higher education institutions about their current plans for the future. ED and CBE: Example of higher ed “structural barrier to change” that is out of institutions’ control

By Phil Hill. There has been a great conversation going on in the comments to my recent post “Universities As Innovators That Have Difficulty Adopting Their Own Changes” on too many relevant issues to summarize (really, go read the ongoing comment thread). They mostly center on the institution and faculty reward system, yet those are not the only sources of structural barriers to change that lead institutions to this “difficulty adopting their own changes”.
