Applications of quality management in language education, by Frank Heyworth. This review examines applications of quality management (QM) in language education. QM approaches have been adapted from methodologies developed in industrial and commercial settings, and these are briefly described. Key aspects of QM in language education are the definition of purpose, descriptions of principles and practice, including various descriptive frameworks, and the place of reflective practice and action research. Quality descriptions for different aspects of language teaching – examinations and assessment, education for migrants, for young learners, in mainstream education – are summarised. There is an account of accreditation and recognition of language teaching institutions and a critical review of some of the contradictions and conflicts in the QM approach, such as those between accountability and trust, and between creativity and standardisation. In India, majority of students studying outside India choose the USA as a country of their choice followed by the UK. Canada and Australia have also joined the list as one of the safest destinations for Indian students. Today the USA receives more Indian students than from any other country in the world. Earlier it was China.
Today looking at the sheer number of students in India willing to study abroad more and more countries have started wooing them. Campuses in the Western world have for long been wooing young Indians, with education fairs, road shows and special admission campaigns. Ever wondered what it would be like to study one of the oldest subjects in the world? ‘Liberal arts’ is one such subject – it goes back to the Ancient Greeks who considered a liberal arts education to be the ultimate mark of an educated person. Interestingly, while liberal arts education has long had an established place in the US higher education system, it has only recently resurfaced in continental Europe, where it originated. Meanwhile in Asia, discussions about introducing liberal arts have started to gain momentum in the past year (2013), while there is as yet only one liberal arts college based in Africa – Ashesi University in Ghana, founded in 2002.

By John Ross. THE top international student destinations are losing ground to countries in Europe and the Middle East, according to a new a report by rankings compilers Quacquarelli Symonds.
The ‘Trends in international student mobility’ report, released last week, found that Australia was not alone in experiencing a troubled international education sector. The top two destination countries, the US and the UK, had seen steeper falls in the proportion of internationally mobile students applying to study at their institutions. More...

Les Français sont moins nombreux que la moyenne européenne à être allés au moins jusqu'au lycée. Et les disparités en termes d'instruction se creusent également en fonction du sexe.
