Read more...

Schadenfreude for the MOOC Is Not Joy for the Higher Ed Status Quo

http://hastac.org/files/imagecache/homepage_50/pictures/picture-79-873560aec16bee4b69793f2fa0fbd715.jpgBy Cathy Davidson. Two important things happened this week in the world of Massive Online Open Courseware (MOOCs) and the larger world of higher ed:
first, came the announcement (not very well contextualized) of a more than 50% failure rate of the for-credit students in the pilot Udacity-San Jose State University program offering three introductory and remedial courses (algebra, intermediate algebra, and statistics) online to both traditional and non-traditional (not admitted) SJSU students. While the courses had a remarkably high completion rate of 83% (most MOOCs have a 10% completion rate and even most face-to-face remedial classes at community colleges and state universities have about a 25-55% completion rate), the failure rate is, of course, unacceptable. SJSU and Udacity have announced a six-month hiatus in the program while they study the data, interview the students and the profs and tutors, and redesign instruction to address this problem and, ideally, remedy it. Clay Shirky Says MOOCs Will Matter, but Worries About Corporate Players

http://chronicle.com/img/photos/biz/icons/wired-campus-nameplate.gifBy Jeffrey R. Young. Clay Shirky, a best-selling author and an associate arts professor at New York University’s Interactive Telecommunications Program, is known for predicting how the latest tech trends will change traditional social institutions. These days he’s turning his focus to colleges themselves, imagining ways that MOOCs and other technologies might reshape higher education. Read more...

The MOOC Money Train - Who Is Driving the Online Locomotive?

http://chronicle.com/img/banner_promo.jpgBy Rob Jenkins. Proponents of online learning often use train metaphors to describe its growing impact on the educational landscape. Those of us who teach at two-year colleges, especially, are constantly encouraged, prodded, hectored, cajoled—and sometimes even ordered—to get on board. Otherwise, we're told, we're likely to be run over. Read more

Merging #mLearning with #MOOC is a good idea

Inge Ignatia de WaardBy Inge Ignatia de Waard. While MOOC are of interest for any training and learning, the surplus of mobile learning or mLearning can not be underestimated. In many ways I feel that the benefits that mLearning offers would add to many MOOC environment. To me a future training platform would merge both mLearning features, as well as MOOC options to come to an ultimate online learning environment that caters intuitively (read ubiquitously) to the learner's own contexts ans needs. But before getting there a couple of hurdles need to be taken, to me the most difficult challenges are. Read more...

In Connectivism, No One Can Hear You Scream: a Guide to Understanding the MOOC Novice

http://mediacdn.disqus.com/uploads/users/5668/3533/avatar92.jpg?1374920932By Keith Brennan. Introduction
I’m not a Constructivist, Behaviourist, Cognitivist, or Connectivist. This is not a call for a return to an older theory. I’m a pragmatist, like many educators. I flirt outrageously with every theory that will have me. I’m ideologically promiscuous. I go with what works, and I am ruthless in weeding out what doesn’t. I do this because there is no “one size fits all” theory. Because there is no “one size fits all” student. And because students, participants, and learners are the final metric that measures any theory, and experience is the proving ground for theory. Faith to a theory, ideological monogamy, gets in the way of the evidence. Read more...

The MOOC Racket

http://www.slate.com/etc/designs/slate/images/mySlateLogoSmall.pngBy Jonathan Rees. Widespread online-only higher ed will be disastrous for students—and most professors. The word mooc sounds a bit like slang from Goodfellas or the affectionate shortening of the already-affectionate name of a former outfielder for the New York Mets. In fact, a MOOC is a new kind of college-like experience that seems to possess the magical power to turn some of the smartest people in academia into followers of a faith-based cult because they want to become its idols. MOOC stands for “massive open online course.” The term was coined by a group of Canadian academics in 2008 to represent a recently invented type of online class that depends upon small group interactions for most of the instruction. The MOOC That Roared

http://www.slate.com/etc/designs/slate/images/mySlateLogoBubble.pngBy Gabriel Kahn. How Georgia Tech’s new, super-cheap online master’s degree could radically change American higher education. Georgia Institute of Technology is about to take a step that could set off a broad disruption in higher education: It’s offering a new master’s degree in computer science, delivered through a series of massive open online courses, or MOOCs, for $6,600. The school’s traditional on-campus computer science master’s degree costs about $45,000 in tuition alone for out-of-state students (the majority) and $21,000 for Georgia residents. But in a few years, Georgia Tech believes that thousands of students from all over the world will enroll in the new program. Read more...
